Standing amid the midwinter snow in a remote part of the Georgian mining area of Beamish Museum is this replica of an 18th Century horse driven "Whim Gin".

The colliery "Whim Gin" was used to raise coal and men out of the mines in the 1700's and early 1800's. By 1825 they had almost entirely been replaced by much more efficient steam driven machines.

It's pay day at the colliery in Beamish Museum and this Edwardian miner's wife is starting to wonder why her man hasn't arrived home with his wages. It's just possible that he's called in for drinks with his pals and, if so, she's ready to give him a welcome home with the carpet beater that he'll not forget in a hurry! An armed and annoyed woman is not something to tackle lightly, as I'm sure he's about to find out.

One of the newest exibits in Beamish Museum's Mahogony Drift Mine is this refurbished Tinsley Winch, seen here in front of the lamp cabin hauling a set of coal tubs out of the drift mine entrance.
Sadly the unit is not in full working condition and has been set up in this way to demonstrate it's normal use.

A typical scene from any colliery anywhere in the UK - until they closed them all down!

Standing under the Heapstead at Beamish Museum is recently restored Aveling & Porter 2-2-0WTG rail locomotive No.9449 "The Blue Circle." The locomotive was originally built in 1926 for use at the Snodland Works of Holborough Cement Co. Ltd., Kent, which was later to become Blue Circle Cement. It is seen here in the company of some 20-tonne coal hopper wagons and a string of considerably older chauldron wagons.
The engine was the 130th and last traction engine railway locomotive built by Aveling & Porter and is believed to be the only one still in existence.

The main winding drum at the top of the vertical steam engine winding house of Beamish Museum's colliery. This giant drum was pivotal in the process of raising and lowering cages up and down the shaft to the deep mine. The steam winder, of which this is part, was built in 1855 at nearby Stanley 2nd Pit by Newcastle engineer Phineas Crowther, and is the last working example in the country.

On a cold, damp winter day at Beamish Museum the view over the colliery yard to the town in the distance reveals smoking evidence of warm and welcoming coal fires burning in the houses. Only a mile away, but still close enough to feel welcoming.

A day in the life of Beamish Museum Colliery! A 1949-built Barclay 0-4-0ST shunting locomotive goes about it's daily business of moving coal hopper waggons about the yard. In the foreground is the winding gear to the drift mine with an 1873-built Head Wrightson "Coffee Pot" shunter standing beside it. In the distance life goes on in the colliery village.

One of the key workers in any deep mine is the man in charge of the winding gear. Here, in the winding house of Beamish Museum colliery, is the very man - looking distinctly relaxed at his work with the main winding drum behind him, master of all he surveys!
