I saw this location off the side of a busy road in the middle of Chicago and couldn't pass up the chance to photograph it. Luckily the guy selling trees didn't mind (although the first thing he asked was if I would be wearing a bikini....how awkward)

I'm flying home on Thursday to see my family and friends for a couple weeks and couldn't be more excited. I'll also be doing a shoot for my sister and her husband, a maternity shoot, hosting a baby shower, and squeezing in some time for self-portraits. We usually don't have a big crowd at our house but this year will be much more people than usual, love this busy holiday season!

Whew! This took much much longer to edit than I expected. Still not sure if I got it completely right but this will have to do for now, I'm off to fight the Christmas shopping crowds. Every year I tell myself I'll get it done early, and every year I'm scrambling to find the right gifts at the last minute.

According to google there is no proven reason why some insects are drawn to light while others shy away from it. But here is an interesting theory...

"Scientists suggest that moths use the moon as a primary reference point and have the ability to calibrate their flight paths as the Earth's rotation causes the moon to move across the sky. (There is even evidence to support the theory that migrating moths have an internal geomagnetic compass system to guide them in the right direction.) So a moth's attraction to an artificial light or to a fire could be related to orientation, and lead to disorientation -- the moth wasn't "expecting" to actually get to "the moon" (the light source) or to be able to fly above it, so confusion results."

Maybe I'm overly sentimental, but I think that's kind of a beautiful metaphor. It reminds me of chasing a dream or something you want very badly.. when you achieve that goal sometimes you simply don't know what to do anymore and its often much different that what you expected it to be.

A continuation of this image I did months ago based on the greek story of Persephone, the goddess of vegetation. According to the legend Persephone is allowed to come out of the underworld for six months of every year, resulting in growth and beautiful weather that makes our spring and summer. I didn't exactly shoot it in the right season considering fall is right around the corner but I'm going to work on this series more as soon as there is some snow on the ground (probably sooner than I expect)

This was shot in Starved Rock, IL, which is an incredible place to visit if you ever get the chance.

Big big thank you to Adam, Ken, Aaron, and Kayla for helping me out with this photo. It took awhile to get the hair and light right and I couldn't have done it without them! We moved into a studio last week and this was my first shoot there, I am so excited about experimenting with lighting and all the big things planned. Cirque du Soleil is this coming week, I'm sure that will get my inspiration going!

Happy new year!

I’m starting a weekly self-portrait project! By the end of this year I hope to have a larger, better portfolio and improved lighting and photoshop skills. I want to push myself to learn as much as possible and grow as an artist so my work will be better technically as well as aesthetically.

A week from today I am moving to Chicago to work for Phlearn. I am so excited to explore the city and live in a completely new place. I’ve shot a few different ideas here at my parents house in NC so I’ll have some time to look for good locations when I get up there and can still post at least once a week. I plan on shooting ahead of time and editing later if I know I’m not going to have time the next week. Crossing my fingers that this project will see completion by 2013!

This photo was taken in Shelby NC, which is named after one of my ancestors Isaac Shelby. I wanted to make an image on how growing up in the south has influenced me, and peeling that layer off since I am moving in a couple months. I think I'll end up tweaking it some more later :)

I'm going to get better at writing descriptions, every time I sit down to do it I feel like I come off as too stiff or something

This photo was a lot of fun to make, its in a cow pasture near my house and the cows kept getting closer to see what I was up to. Every time I started running with the fabric they would scatter, and then when I went back to check the shot they came right back again. One was trying to lick the camera haha

Took this shot in a forest preserve in Chicago. It was so nice to be outside and away from the city noise for a little while, I will definitely be taking more photos there soon!

I tried to edit this so that the colors would make it more interesting since its a simpler photo, color and composition are something I want to experiment with more.
