Died: London 7th May 2013.

Hollywood and filmmakers the world over are today mourning the loss of special effects titan and stop-motion animation genius Ray Harryhausen. Harryhausen himself was inspired by the stop motion work of pioneer Willis O'Brien in the original 1933 King Kong. He went on to animate special effects and creatures for the Sinbad movies, Jason and the Argonauts, Clash of the Titans (1981), Mighty Joe Young (1949), It Came from Beneath the Sea, Mysterious Island, One Million Years B.C, 20 Million Miles to Earth, Earth Versus the Flying Saucers.

Harryhausen's work made John Landis want to become a filmmaker, inspired magic-and-wonder chief Steven Spielberg, as well as sci-fi action film virtuoso James Cameron, and others such as Peter Jackson, George Lucas, horror and fantasy specialist Sam Raimi, stop motion animator Nick Park, special makeup guru Rick Baker, fantasy film genius Terry Gilliam, and stop motion animator Phil Tippet (who animated the imperial walkers in the Battle of Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back).

Harryhausen's influence on cinema and filmmaking technique was colossal and can never be understimated.

This is an email from me to my creative partner Ray Larabie. I'm working on a font and decided to send an early draft to Ray for fun and enjoyment. I have a completely cynical attitude towards commercial typeface design(s). They all suck in one way or another, often in several ways, so I'm determined to make this commercial entry nice and sucky for the masses.

The font name "Gay Rounded" is only a development name and will be changed to something else on release. The references to urine, dandruff, fluff, toenail clippings, vomit beast, sick, monkey pee and "added urine"---these are all satirical comments from me. It's actually a very nice font. I told you I'm totally cynical about commercial typeface design. The repeated mentions of "urine" are an in-joke between Ray and I. Urine is a funny word when used in a perversely gratuitous manner.

The string "soft, condescending urine for the masses" sums up my view of commercial art and design. Essentially that's what you're making when you agree to make art with no soul designed with one size fits all in mind.
