This grove of oaks is one of my favorite places in the MROSD preserves. The range of light from trunks in deep shadows to backlit leaves and bright sky make it very hard to make an image that shows what our eyes can see. This image was made from two exposures.

Over the years, I've taken lots of pictures of Indian Warriors, but always from the side. I finally realized that shooting straight down on them is the best way to show the colors in the flower petals (and sepals?) and the shape of their leaves.

We stopped to take a drink and I looked up and saw this cluster of redwoods with all those limbs reaching out above us.

This guy was nearly a foot long. He (or she) froze on the trail, allowing me to lie down and take a portrait.
