what is a "cup"? when the doc asks you "how many cups of coffee do you drink a day?" do you answer using those funny little white lines on the side of the pot that are clearly only there to measure the amount of water and beans, or do you answer "oh, about two" - meaning two travel mugs?

S. made slime in her AP Chemistry class today. The AP exam is over, and so, apparently, is the studying. Well deserved, I think.

Yesterday was the official commencement for George Mason University. I am officially no longer a student. Even though I defended my dissertation back in February, it wasn't until yesterday that I was officially graduated. I now can say I have a Ph.D. in economics.

I included the passage from Lucille Clifton because for me, graduate school was a real battle. It took a toll on me in a way that I didn't expect ( here is Lucille reading this poem: m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=XM7q_DUk5wU&desktop_uri=%2Fwa... ). I'm glad I did it; I don't think I would do it again if I knew ahead of time how hard it would be.

Most of grad school, this was my uniform - flip flops, jeans, and a t-shirt. The hat I am wearing was my writing hat. When I really had to think hard, I would put it on. Sort of a Dumbo feather.

I'm not really sure what comes next professionally, which is why I posed looking up and off. I find when I come to the end of something really hard, I often feel a bit of a let down after the initial elation of the hard thing being over. I'm starting some research, and I have a couple of loose ideas for books I want to write, but what's next - it's hard to say.

I've been talking to the Rhino about her interest in going to art school, and trying to learn more about graphic design. As a result, I'm becoming interested in graphic design myself. I've decided to start adding some additional elements to my pictures just to push the envelope in a slightly different direction.

This is my very good friend Mark M. Mark used to teach with me at Army-Baylor. At the beginning of one academic year I told the class he and I were twins, and of course you know that there is always an evil twin - but that they were going to have to figure out which of us was the evil twin.

The consensus was that they thought I was the evil twin until he gave his first exam.

We're a bit like DeVito and Schwarzenegger in that old movie. He has about 6 inches on me, which is why I am on the step ladder.

We wore different color hats so you could tell us apart.

The shadows know. So technically I took the pics this is based on yesterday but i did all the manipulation today, so I am going to count this as today's pic unless something else interesting comes up.

umbrellas have always fascinated me a bit. they are so delicate and fragile, yet the create the huge spaces relative to their strength. the technology is simple yet elegant.

when I was a kid, we lived in the servants' quarters of an old house, and my father paid the rent by being the grounds keeper. the old woman who owned the house had been to China before the Japanese invasion and the Communist revolution with her father who had been a Colonel in the US Army. Amongst the many treasures she had from her family's time there, she had many delicate parasols and umbrellas with fantastic designs.

this umbrella is just for my flash. it's not fancy.

this week I am going through the Army's "Combatives Level 1" training - the Army's new hand-to-hand combat program. It's fun because it's all based on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which I did for several years, but had set aside because of other time commitments. It's a 40 hour program, 8 hours a day of fighting. You can train barefoot, or wear wrestling shoes. After the first day, my feet were so torn up from mat-burn, I busted out my old wrestling shoes, which I have been happily wearing this week ever since.
