abhurite crystals from shipwreck

Abhurite occurs exclusively on tin ingots in shipwrecks. It is formed by the chemical reaction between the tin and the chloride ions present in seawater. Here, a scanning electron micrograph shows the platy abhurite crystals discovered on tin ingots salvaged from the wreck of S.S. Liverpool off the coast of Anglesey.

Capel Garmon Firedog
From: National Museum Cardiff

This firedog is unique, and considered to be one of the most important pieces of early decorative ironwork to have been found in Britain. It illustrates the skill and artistic imagination invested in the working of iron during the Celtic Iron Age. It was discovered in 1852 near Capel Garmon, Conwy.
Firedogs, usually used in pairs, would have stood next to the hearth at the heart of a roundhouse. The opposed animal heads with both horse and cow affinities have a mythical beast quality, whose significance we can still only guess at.
Piece of olivine dolerite from Head Crater on the Moon. Collected during the Apollo 11 mission to the moon in November 1969. The moon rock, on loan from NASA is kept in a special airtight container filled with nitrogen to protect it from contamination. At 3.3 billion years old, it is considerable older than the most ancient Welsh rock, which is displayed alongside it – and a mere 702 million years old.
The triple harp is different from the more conventional harp as it has three sets of strings and no pedals. It originated in Italy around 1600, but owing to its popularity in Wales by the end of the 18th century, it has become widely known as 'The Welsh Harp'. The instrument has three rows of strings, making it possible to play chromatic notes in addition to the diatonic scale.
From: National Museum Cardiff

This stone from near Pentrefoelas, Conwy, commemorates a gift of land from Llywelyn ab Iorwerth (1194–1240) to the Cistercian abbey at Aberconwy nearby. The inscription, cut between 1198 and 1230, can be read like a document. It plays on words, in a clever mixture of Welsh and Latin. This elaborate compliment explains Llywelyn’s Latinised name.

In 1877, the Tynewydd Colliery was inundated with water from an adjoining coal mine. Five men were killed and nine trapped by the flooding. Four of the trapped men were released after eighteen hours but the last five were only rescued after nine days. The heroism of the rescuers was recognised by the award of twenty four Albert Medals, the first time that this medal had been awarded for bravery on land. Three of these medals are on display at Big Pit.

Cae Adda Cow byre comes from Waunfawr, less then 5km from the original site of Llainfadyn Cottage. It would have been similar to the original cow shed at Llainfadyn. It was re-erected at the Museum to help interpret a fuller picture of life in a quarryman's cottage in Snowdonia. It would have housed a couple of cows over winter thus providing extra milk to be sold or consumed.

The largest turtle in the World
From: National Museum Cardiff

The leatherback turtle on display at the National Museum Cardiff, is so-called because of its tough but flexible carapace in place of the usual hard, shell-like protection. Not only is it, as a species, the largest reptile in the sea: this particular example is the world's largest and heaviest turtle ever recorded by man, measuring almost 3m (9ft) and weighing 914 kilos (2016 pounds). The turtle was washed ashore after being drowned when trapped in fishing lines. The discovery attracted world-wide attention and offered a rare opportunity for scientists to study a species whose life is intriguing and little-known. Work on preserving the turtle took a year to complete.
From: National Museum Cardiff

This unique oval bowl, made of shale, tin and embossed gold, represents a sea-going boat with circular shields, oars and waves represented in its design. Discovered in a bog at Caergwrle, Flintshire during the early 19th century, it had been buried in the ground for over 3,000 years. The symbolism of the boat reminds us of the importance of far-flung sea trading contacts during the European Bronze Age.

Shanghai Bardic Chair
From: St Fagans: National History Museum

This Eisteddfod chair was presented as a prize for the best poet in the National Eisteddfod at Wrexham in 1933. What makes the chair unusual is that it was made at an orphanage in Shanghai, established by Catholic missionaries, where youngsters were taught crafts such as carving. The chair took four of them around 18 months to make. It is carved with both Chinese and Welsh inscriptions.

Dodo with skeleton
From: The National Waterfront Museum, Swansea

The word Dodo is now synonymous with the worst thing that can happen to a wild animal - becoming extinct. The Dodo is a very early example of how we can unthinkingly destroy something such that they disappear without a thought. The skeleton held in the Museum is mostly complete with only a few bones needing to be modelled to complete it. The stuffed example is, however, a model, as there are no skins left of the Dodo anywhere in the world. The Dodo was first seen in 1601 and sadly last seen just 80 years later.
