Pupal mating in Heliconius butterflies
Competition for mates have resulted in species where males are capable to find females before they are sexually mature and establish associations with them until mating. This behavior, known as precopulatory mate guarding is known in species of aquatic crustaceans, salmon, frogs and some insects. Several species in the genus Heliconius (Nymphalidae: Heliconiinae), and only one species outside the genus, exhibit precopulatory mate guarding. In this fascinating mating system males find pupae at several stages of pupal development and start guarding by perching on them when females are close to eclosion. Some males also insert their abdomen through the cuticle close to the pupal abdominal section. Mating happen the moment females start breaking from their pupal case and have their wings unextended and soft so we call this mating strategy 'pupal mating'. Males of these species are not exclusively attracted to pupae but also court and mate adult females which they recognize using wing coloration.
