Word: Obadiah

(Jim LePage) posted a photo:

(Word is a series of designs for books of the Bible. This is Obadiah. Find out more about Word.)

I've been dreading Obadiah. I put it off for a couple weeks, first by posting the 2 Kings Leftover two weeks ago, then last week announcing that Word prints were available and posting free Job wallpapers. At 21 verses, Obadiah is the shortest book in the Old Testament. How do I find something to design in 21 verses? Plus, he's a minor prophet and we all know that major prophets have the superpowers and minor prophets sit at the kid's table.

Judgement and Hope

In the spirit of the brevity of Obadiah, I'll make my reflection of the book short:

Israel's enemies are judged. Israel is given hope through the promise of their eventual victory.

It's time to kick some Bass

When I hit a design roadblock, I like to take a time out and look through my inspiration folder which is filled with examples of cool design that I've found on the internet. Obadiah was definitely a design roadblock, and as I was looking through my inspiration folder, I came across the designs of Saul Bass. His style may look familiar if you are a fan of old movies. Among other things, Bass created posters for many films during the 50s, 60s and 70s, including many for Alfred Hitchcock's movies. (Check out some of his work.)

After getting a nice kick in the Bass, I jumped back into design mode and did some inspired-by-but-not-nearly-as-cool-as-Saul-Bass work.

Next up, Jonah.
