The Gardens at Great Dixter

UGArdener posted a photo:

I'm reposting this shot from my trip to England last year because I just discovered that Great Dixter now has its own YouTube channel and they just posted this video that shows the entire process that goes into making the pot display each week:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lc5MwNxw5BQ&feature=g-all-u

_______________________________________________________________________
My original comment over a year ago:

On this trip I finally made it to Great Dixter. After trying to get there without success by public transport on previous trips, I finally learned that the best way is by bus from Rye, a most worthwhile destination anyway, where I spent three nights in late May. I got to the gardens on a perfect late May morning, the crowds were not bad at all, and I even got to meet Fergus Garrett, who took over the running of the garden when Christopher Lloyd died in 2006.

Today I've gone quickly through over 300 images and have picked out a few that give an overview of this iconic place. If you have time to click on the set and run the SLIDESHOW in FullScreen Mode, you can take a quick tour. Later in the summer, I plan to go back, add the best of the remaining shots, and annotate them. Until then, here are some links:

Here are a few more shots from the set that I put up yesterday. This is a giant ship in a bottle - the current contemporary art installation on the Fourth Plinth at Trafalgar Square.

"The Fourth Plinth is an empty plinth in Trafalgar Square in central London originally intended to hold an equestrian statue. At the centre of the Square is Nelson's Column, which is guarded by four lion statues at its base. For over 150 years there was much squabbling about what to do with the fourth plinth, but very little agreement, until the temporary use of the plinth to display three pieces of art in the last years of the 20th century lead to a commission being formed to decide on a use for it. Eventually that commission unanimously decided to use it for exhibition of art, and currently the fourth plinth displays changing pieces of contemporary art, currently a 1:30 scale model of HMS Victory in a glass jar......this work, by a leading Anglo-Nigerian artist, Yinka Shonibare, consists of a replica of Nelson's ship, the HMS Victory, with sails made of printed fabric in a colourful African pattern inside a large glass bottle stopped with a cork. According to the Greater London Authority, the artwork is the first "to reflect specifically on the historical symbolism of Trafalgar Square, which commemorates the Battle of Trafalgar, and will link directly with Nelson's column. It is also the first commission by a black British artist "

The first morning after I got back from London in late May I put up a few quickly selected shots from my last day there, which happened to be the day of the Presidential State Visit. I had spent the morning around the Palace, the Mall, St. James Park, Trafalgar Square, both sides of the Thames, and Westminster just soaking up the atmosphere, then returned to Westminster Abbey after lunch to see the arrival of the Obamas to place a wreath inside. I've now gone back and added more shots and arranged them in roughly chronological order. Here's a link to the smaller "highlights" set that I originally put up:
This is the famous scene painted by John Constable in "The Hay Wain". I took this at about 6:00 AM one gorgeous morning in late June. One of the most perfect walks I've ever taken, with a wonderful breakfast of kedgeree and stone ground oat porridge waiting for me back at the room.

The Stour forms the boundary between Suffolk and Essex here.

More information from contact Anthony Chammond:

This timber framed Suffolk farmhouse is known as Willy Lott's House, it is situated beside the millstream close to the mill. It was built between 1600 and 1700 and was taken over by the Lott family in 1720. Its most famous inhabitant was Willy Lott a farmer who lived there all his live from 1758 to 1842. The house is now used as accommodation by the Field Studies Council.
Flatford Mill July 2004 - after Lightroom

I just got the latest version of Adobe Lightroom and have been experimenting with some of my older images shot on my old Canon point-and-shoot, applying some of the simplest automatic Lightroom adjustments. The version I originally put up in 2004 is in the second comment. The first thing I notice is better defined shadows on the side of the mill with the Lightroom version.

Next I'm going to try and teach myself how to do some of the more advanced dodging and burning, hoping to improve things like the sky in this picture, but it all looks very complicated and intimidating!. Looks like I'll be spending a lot of time on YouTube, etc., finding the best tutorials.

If anyone with more experience in Lightroom wants to have a go at improving this image, please feel free and post your version in a comment below.
