Horse herd at the beach

As we were packing up to leave the beach a few hours later, we spotted this small herd of horses visiting the beach. I guess they wanted to get away from the bugs in the marsh, too. They stood here for quite some time just twitching their tails.

Dunes on Cumberland Island. The dunes are quite beautiful, with their architecture defined by the wind.

Dungeness ruins

The ruins of Dungeness are behind a barrier and unapproachable, but impressive nonetheless. This mansion was originally built in the 1880s and was gutted by a fire in 1959.

This is the beach at Cumberland Island. Miles and miles of fine, powdery sand with few people in sight.

Feral horse

Cumberland Island is home to many wild (feral) horses. This stallion seemed to choose the grounds of Greyfield Inn as it's primary territory. While the horses living near Greyfield were not fed, I did see this watering trough in use.

As I wandered the grounds on my last morning at Greyfield, I saw this inscription. I think it reads "LRF 1926." I'm not sure what this concrete thing is, but I believe the LRF in the inscription is Lucy R. Ferguson, daughter of Thomas Carnegie and owner/occupier of Greyfield until the early 1960's.

Ancient live oak

This ancient live oak is about 300 years old. It sits on the grounds of Greyfield near the "bike barn."

Here's the front view in all it's glory. In the foreground is a what looked to be an old mounting block and some hitches for carriages and horses. Today it is used as a place to park bikes being used by Greyfield guests.

I "nested" in this swing for two afternoons. There were swings at both the north and south ends of the wide porch, but I liked this one the best. The view was restful and the sounds mostly harmonious. I could hear the surf on the beach (about a mile away), the whinnying of the horses, and the songs of several birds. Not much else disturbed my dozing, reading, and knitting.

I spent two delightful afternoons just relaxing in this swing at the north end of the porch. There were swings at both the north and south ends of the wide porch, but I liked this one the best. Marshes near Dungeness

The marshes at the south end of the island on the Dungeness ground were full of wildlife. Within the salty waters were huge oyster beds. During a morning bird-watching expedition, we saw a marsh hen grooming itself at the edge of the marsh grasses, as well as catbird, red-winged blackbird, and vultures.
