As I’m having an unwinding glass of red wine in the peace and quiet of our home -one of those rituals I missed the most having during my pregnancy I must confess- I feel utterly and completely fulfilled. Today I received my always welcome newsletter of “your baby: week 25”. As I read through all the interesting facts and tips about my baby’s development, one remark caught my attention: my boy is halfway to his first birthday! What!? No Way! I thought. And suddenly I couldn’t stop thinking of all what we have learned and accomplished together: we now wake up with a big smile on our faces when we meet each morning and I pick him up of his crib; we are having our little brief tini tiny me time of him playing and me on the computer or doing some house shores; we take naps without big fuzzes and every day these are passing the 30 minute mark; we eat all sorts of meals without having to use “disguise tricks” or even warm them (room temp rules), we grab, pull, push all sorts of things, talk in our own special way, smile to nice people and most important of all: understand and love each other like there’s no tomorrow. We still haven’t mastered tummy time though… as you can see in this shot. Nevertheless, big pad on our shoulders, we have done good my boy!

Can you believe that smile? That’s the smile of a little boy about to turn 5 months in a couple of days. And we are welcoming this 5th month with tempting banana and mango juices and sweet carrot-chicken-squash soups for lunch. We are also rolling to the sides, grabbing whatever comes handy (especially mom’s hair) and practicing p’s and t’s which ends up in big bubbles of saliva all over, but still on that smile is pretty irresistible. oh! and we are rocking new t-shirts as well. Summer has been good to us.

It seems ages since my last post about my Lil’ Turrio turning another week old. So much has happened and let me tell you, you are all welcome to Lil’ Turrio’s Fantastic Roller-coaster of Emotions. Yesterday was one of those days when one minute you are energized, feeling like you can take over the world (with a huge stroller and all…) and the next you feel completely drained, asking yourself if you can keep doing what you are doing. And then you find yourself smiling to a lovely baby who has just discovered how to fart and laugh at the same time to then sitting on the couch crying along with your inexplicably unconsolable crying little boy. Being a mommy is tough! So when he’s finally down for the day, and you take a long hot take-all-my-worries-away shower and go to bed to wake up later on at 3am for his night feeding, you know he’s awake ‘cause you hear him cry. So you get out of your warm bed, sneak to his bedroom half asleep, hold him in your arms and suddenly you feel the touch of his little fingers grabbing your hand and everything feels right again. You do nothing but smile. And you keep holding him and you feel nothing but smooshy squishy delicious love.

Something I’ve learnt during these past two months is that the only thing sure about my little one is to expect the unexpected. As I read in every possible blog how everyone else’s little angels have already a routine by 2 months, my Lil’ Turrio keeps surprising me with different patterns which is definitely something for this control freak mommy. Some days he naps, some days he plays, some days he cries, some days all he does is eat. It is as if he were telling “Oh come on mommy! add some little surprising chaos to your life!”. I’m trying Turrio! I’m really trying.

So I’m a little reluctant to type what follows because I’m afraid that the minute I press the keys and form that sweet sentence to the eyes, I’m going to jinx the whole thing, but… I’m going to be brave… so are you ready?: My Lil’ Turrio is starting to sleep almost a 5 hour nap in the night, F I V E hour nap! or what most sleeping experts call “Sleeping through the night”. He’s also doing it in his crib -only after falling asleep in mommy’s or daddy’s arms.

There I did it. Am I a brave mommy or what!?

My first mother’s day has still got me smiling today. As this little one takes a peaceful nap with smiling reflexes all over the place, all I can think of is how fortunate I am to have him by my side. Even though his naps are definitely a break for mommy these days, every time I see him so darn beautiful in his sleep, I secretly wish for him to wake up and be again with me…

Mommy paradoxes I sure never imagined.
