Bird's Nest Fungi

Red~Star posted a photo:

Finally I found some bird's nest fungi that still had seeds in them [ although wet ones]. I discovered these on our hike this morning. Maybe not a big deal to anyone but me, but I'm so excited.

Additional info:

1, Commonly known as the bird's nest fungi, their fruiting bodies resemble tiny egg-filled birds' nests complete with tiny "eggs". As they are saprobic, feeding on decomposing organic matter, they are often seen growing on decaying wood and in soils enriched with wood chips or bark mulch;

2. The nests are splash cups. When a raindrop hits one at the right angle, the walls are shaped such that the eggs are expelled a good distance from the nest. Some species have a sticky trailing thread, a funicular cord, attached to the peridiole.
If that thread encounters a twig on its flight the egg will swing around and wrap itself around the twig. The spores can then germinate there and start the life cycle over again.

It's been wet here all month so I ran across more mushrooms on our walk today. It wasn't raining at the time...so didn't have to shoot w/ an umbrella.

I've never seen a mushroom shaped like this first one. I'll have to see if I can find it in my book. The shape and texture reminds me of an ear. The first mushroom is an Elfin Saddle [Gyromitra infula]...thanks "ressaure" & "LeapFrog!" for the ID.

Scroll down to see more!

I've never seen a mushroom shaped like this first one. I'll have to see if I can find it in my book. The shape and texture reminds me of an ear. The first mushroom is an Elfin Saddle [Gyromitra infula]...thanks "ressaure" & "LeapFrog!" for the ID.

When I arrived at my cat colony this morning, I was horrified to see this lifeless cat on the side of the road. A casualty of someone driving by when she decided to cross. Although a country road with very light traffic, people do drive by fast.

She's my only tabby with orange mixed in, so I knew immediately it was her. Of my ten cats, she was one of the shy ones and always off by herself. I'm glad I went this morning and found her body....otherwise I would have never known what happened to her. I took her to my vet to be cremated.

A friend of mine who does not belong to Flickr but has Cattle Dogs sent me this email this morning:

"Hi Rebecca! I was searching through an iPhone application called Wallpaper HD and I came across this picture. I told my friends "I know this dog, it's Jasmine". I think they thought I was crazy. Its her right? If so did you know that her image is out there like that?"

'Sure enough it was this image of Jasmine that I posted here on Flickr back in 2008....stolen....and being used for profit w/out my knowledge or consent. I am burning mad. But short of putting large watermarks on our images, what can we do to avoid this blatant theft?????

I was happy to see the first goslings for this year. There are ten in this clutch...the parents were accompanied by four other geese...love how the other geese helped with the supervision of the babies..

I was hoping they'd curl up next to mom for a family portrait...but no....they were busy the entire time I was there. Have you ever tried to take pics of a dozen moving targets [ including the parents] with a telephoto lens? More images below.

I have been gone all day....so will play catch up at your stream tonight and this weekend.

Hen singing "cock-a-doodle doo".
I sure wish I knew what kind of hen & rooster these are. I looked online but didn't see an exact match. They followed me around this morning while I was setting up my cat traps.

I did manage to trap another cat [ see below]. I'm told there's a mother w/ kittens on this property but I've yet to see them or any others. I hope your Monday is going well.

You'd never guess I took this in the rain. There I was, laying in the grass, umbrella in one hand and heavy camera in the other. My husband was laughing at the sight of me, on my belly trying to stay dry.!
This mushroom was quite large [ the cap would cover the inside of your hand].....and there were smaller ones ones nearby .....but just couldn't capture them all together with my macro lens. One more image below.
