Hole In The Wall Beach - Davenport California

We have had nothing but clear warm weather here in N. California so I had a look through some of my old files. I worked on this image a little after returning from this cool March sunset but pushed it aside to work on some other images.

I came back to this one mainly because a contact of mine Jim Patterson put together a beach cleanup this past Sunday, unfortunately I was unable to make it.... Jim, I will make the next one for sure!

Even though its been a few months since my last visit here, it's still one of my all time favorite beaches. From the beautiful "crack" in the rock (left of this image) to the warm smooth sand, this beach has it all ! Anyway...... Thank you Jim for putting the cleanup together. It looks like you all had successful clean up and shoot.

Hole In The Wall Beach - Davenport California

The rain held off most of the day so I headed south to Santa Cruz. I looked at a few beaches along highway 1 but the sky didn't look all that promising so I continued north. I ended up running into Jim Patterson at Bonny Doon. We walked down and had a look at the area and decided Hole In The Wall would be a better spot for sunset. We made our way down the trail, across the creak that flowed into the ocean and down the beach. Only being on this beach once before, I was open to setup anywhere, but Jim found a nice rock ledge to shoot from. It didn't take long for me to see that this "crack" had a lot of interesting movement in the water so I unpacked my gear, cleaned my filters and setup at the edge.

I have a feeling I ended up in the spot Jim was eyeballing (sorry Jim) due to the fact that he was "running around like a chicken with it's head cut off" (his own words) We both ended up with almost the exact composition but its always interesting to see how the details change from person to person, camera to camera.

Thanks Jim for the tour of the beach, it was nice meeting up with you.

Panther Beach, Davenport California

Finally a late spring / early summer storm makes it's way over N. California....

Once I parked and made my way down the creek trail, I made my way through the "hole in the wall" . I could see there was someone down at the south end of the beach with a tripod standing in the surf. I had a feeling it was my contact Jim Patterson .

The surf was very interesting..... It looked to be very calm about 100 yards off shore but the waves that were crashing down on the beach were giant! (giant for me) So as I walked up to the area where Jim was, I noticed a few things. First, the area where I was planning on setting up was getting hammered by the pounding surf and the other was a small 1-2 ft ridge that had been cut into the sand. I liked the way the waves would come up and over this little ridge but I wanted to wait until the light was low.

Here is one of my first images from the evening. I decided to show a different view than Jim's..... Not all that colorful but I think the water movement makes up for it. I am sure as the clear summer days get longer and longer, I will post some facing the other direction, but for now its this......

Good to meet up with you again Jim.......

maxxsmart posted a photo:

Im not 100% sure but I believe this is Hole In The Wall Beach. North of Santa Cruz and just a little south of Davenport is where I found this beach. After seeing a image from Jim Patterson I decided to go looking around the area for my own composition.

After making the easy hike down I walked from end to end looking for the best area to catch the sunset as well as some nice water movement. I noticed the sand was packed down tight allowing the water and sand to capture the colors and reflection of the sky. I also noticed how the waves were crashing along this rock edge, at times what looked to be 50-75 ft high. I knew I wanted these two elements in my image so I found a spot on the beach that had no kelp or other sea life in the frame and setup.
