This church is known to Petersburgers as the Church on the Blood, as it marks the spot where Alexander II was fatally wounded in an assassination attempt on March 1, 1881.

Alexander II died of the wounds inflicted by the terrorist group "People's Will". Immediately, his heir, Alexander III, declared his intention to erect a church on the site in his father's memory, and to have this church built in "traditional Russian" style.

After the Revolution, the church - despite becoming an official cathedral in 1923 - was looted. It was re-opened in 1997 after renovations.

Denmark_0113 - Little Mermaid

PLEASE, no multi invitations in your comments. Thanks.

The Little Mermaid statue was presented to Copenhagen from brewer Carl Jacobsen (The Carlsberg Breweries) in 1913, made by a then little known sculptor called Edvard Erichsen.

In 1909, brewer Carl Jacobsen saw solo dancer Ellen Price dance in the ballet "The Little Mermaid" at the Royal Theatre. He was so taken with her that he asked her if she would pose for a statue. She agreed but was not very interested in posing without any clothes on, when she found out just how public the statue would be. Instead sculptor Edvard Erichsen's wife stepped in and modeled for the body.

The Little Mermaid symbolizes the fairy tale by Danish author and poet Hans Christian Andersen, the story of a young mermaid who fell in love with a prince who lived on land, and often came up to the edge of the water to look for her love.

The story of The Little Mermaid is not a very happy one. She visits a witch and agrees to give the witch her tongue, in exchange for legs to replace her fish tail, so she can live on land with her love, the prince. Also she agreed that every step she takes on her new legs they would hurt like she is walking on swords. To be with her love she becomes a mute and is in pain with every step she took, but despite all her sacrifices she never gets to be with him.

Long Neck Padong people are a unique hill tribe in Thailand as some of the women choose to wear a brass coil that over time elongates the neck as much as double.

They really do not have elongated necks at all. The heavy brass coils around the necks press down on the rib cage and causing the ribs to grown downwards. The weight of the coils also pushes the necks and shoulder muscles deep into the shoulders. All this creates the illusion of a longer neck, when in fact it is the upper body which has been shaped to give the appearance of a long neck.

There is much speculation about why the rings are worn by the women of this tribe, many will tell you it is simply tradition. It is thought they use to protect them from tiger attacks as the tiger will go for the neck. They start at a young age and add to the rings over time.

There is much speculation about why the rings are worn by the women of this tribe, many will tell you it is simply tradition. It is thought they use to protect them from tiger attacks as the tiger will go for the neck. They start at a young age and add to the rings over time.

After being let off at the dock and path to Thien Cung Cave, the boat joined others just off shore to wait for our return. Ha Long Bay, Vietnam

This was a beautiful cruise except for the fact that the whole area was full of a mist (pollution). The area is suffering from increasing pollution due to industrial and urban development, coal mining, nearby coal fired power plant and tourism.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My next trip(s) have been booked and deposits paid - I will be leaving in May for just over 3 weeks. I am going to Tunisia (9 days) and then onto the Balkins - Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia (14 days). The main parts for me are the Roman ruins in Tunisia and the desert. I just picked the other countries as Tunisia was to short a time and the Balkins tour started 2 days after the Tunisia tour ended.

The Sibelius Monument is dedicated to the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (1865–1957). The monument is located at the Sibelius Park in Helsinki. It was designed by Eila Hiltunen and unveiled on September 7, 1967.

It consists of series of more than 600 hollow steel pipes welded together in a wave-like pattern. The purpose of the artist was to capture the essence of the music of Sibelius. The monument weighs 24 tons and measures 8.5 × 10.5 × 6.5 meters.

The south gate is the best preserved gate of Angkor Thom. It is approached from outside via a causeway that extends about fifty meters across a moat. On each side of the causeway are railings fashioned with 54 stone figures engaged in the performance of a famous Hindu story: The churning of the Ocean of Milk was an elaborate process. Mount Mandaranchal was used as the churning tool, and Vasuki, the king of serpents, became the churning rope. On the left side of the moat, 54 'devas' (guardian gods) pull the head of the snake while on the right side 54 'asuras' (demon gods) pull the snake's tail in the opposite direction.
They pulled on it alternately causing the mountain to rotate, which in turn churned the ocean. By alternating back and forth, the ocean was "milked", forming the earth and the cosmos anew.

Tsar Cannon is an enormous cannon, commissioned in 1586 by Russian Tsar Feodor. The cannon weighs nearly 38 metric tonnes and has a length of 5.34 meters (17.5 feet), a calibre of 890 mm (35 inches), and an external diameter of 1200 mm (41 inches). The Guinness Book of Records lists it as the largest howitzer ever made.

The cannon was fired at least once but never in battle and the cannon balls are decorative only, They are too large to have been used in the Tsar Cannon, which would have fired 800 kg stone grapeshot.

Built in 135 AD, it is a monumental tomb for Gaius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus , the governor of the province of Asia; from his son Galius Julius Aquila.

The building was used as a library, the scrolls of the manuscripts were kept in cupboards in niches on the walls. There were double walls behind the bookcases, probably to protect the manuscripts from humidity. The capacity of the library was more than 12,000 scrolls. It was ruined and burned as a result of the invasion of the Goths in 265 AD.

The facade of the library is two stories, with Corinthian style columns on the ground floor, and behind it, there are three entrances to the building. The one in the middle is higher than the other two. The statues in the niches of the columns today are the copies of the originals, which were taken to Viana on the excavations in 1910. The statues symbolize wisdom (Sophia), knowledge (Episteme), intelligence (Ennoia) and virtue (Arete) of Celsus .

This great site of Ta Prohm is a place I highly recommend for anyone visiting this area. It lets a person experience what all the ruins looked like when they were found and covered by the forest.

The strangle fig trees are amazing, the roots grow down to the forest floor where they take root and get nutrients from the soil. Gradually the roots wrap around the the building in this case, widen, and slowly form a lattice work that surrounds the buildings.

Russia_2025 - Boat House and Cathedral
In the middle of the fortress of St. Petersburg stands the Peter and Paul Cathedral, the burial place of all the Russian Emperors and Empresses from Peter the Great to Alexander III. The Cathedral was the first church in the city to be built of stone (between 1712-33) and its design is curiously unusual for a Russian Orthodox church.

On top of the cathedrals’ gilded spire stands a magnificent golden angel holding a cross. This weathervane is one of the most prominent symbols of St Petersburg, and at 123 meters (404ft) tall, the cathedral is the highest building in the city.

The salmon coloured building is Peter the Great's Boat House built in 1762-1765. The building was designed to store a national relic, Peter the Great's boat. Peter's small rowboat with a sail, the one he used to learn sailing, was shipped from Moscow to St. Petersburg in 1723. The original boat remained here between 1767 to 1931 and is now in the Central Museum of the Navy. An exact replica of Peter's boat was built in 1997 and installed at the Boat House in celebration of the 300th anniversary of the Russian Navy.
