These always remind me of prickly lollipops. They're dipsacus, also known as teasel plants. I love the way these look backlit -- their prickliness really comes out.

I'm not a morning person, but sometimes I just happen to be up when the sun is rising. This morning I was on my way to pick up my mom for an early morning doctor appointment. I was able to pull over, take this (and a few other shots) and still make it to my mom's doctor appointment on time. I thought that was quite the accomplishment :) As I said, I'm not typically a morning person :)

On my first trip to Shark Fin Cove I ran into Randall Harrison, a fellow Flickr photographer, who took the most amazing photo from inside this cave (link). I was inspired to return and capture my own version from this beautiful and secluded spot.

Well, it was secluded until a group of college kids showed up to make a bonfire. It wasn't a problem until they started running back and forth in front of the cave, which for HDR shots is a bit of a problem. So I told them I would love for them to be in the shot, but asked if they could stand still for a few seconds so I could fire off five frames. As soon as they figured out they were going to be in the photo, they all ran off, except for one of them. I guess she was the vain one of the group.

One of the many incredible shots I was able to get on this beautiful, placid evening on the Massachusetts coast. Aside from the setting being beautiful, the sunset was so vibrant. I really lucked out with the calmness of the ocean -- it made the reflection of the clouds possible. All in all the whole thing was pretty magical.

As I went through this set of photos from the trip I took to Davenport, CA last week, I was amazed by how quickly the light changes around sunset. This shot was taken only 14 minutes before the shot I've linked in comments. I have a bunch of good shots on that outing, so you can expect to see more from this beautiful spot.

This was taken at Shark Fin Cove in Davenport, CA. While shooting here I ran into fellow Flickr photographer Randall Harrison. It's a really beautiful spot, and I'm so happy to have found it! Getting to the beach from the bluffs above is a bit of a task, but totally worth it!

EDIT: I forgot to adjust for the fact that Flickr seems to apply some sharpening to uploaded images. Usually it's not an issue unless I use unsharp mask in Photoshop (which I rarely do, but did for this photo). Oh well.... It looks better on black.

One of the greatest rewards of landscape photography is that I've discovered some of the beautiful hidden (and not-so-hidden) gems of the San Francisco Bay Area, not least of which is the Pacific coast.

In late 2011 I decided to focus on improving my photography skills, and this has paid off enormously for me. In the past 9 months I've done more exploration and discovery in my own backyard than I had in the previous 13 years living in the Bay Area. Through this exploration and discovery I've had a chance to be alone and introspective -- landscape photography can be a lonesome endeavor. At the same time, I've met and interacted with so many skilled and inspiring photographers, both here on Flickr and on Google+. Both my alone time and the time I've spent on photowalks, meetups and just interacting with other photographers online have made photography more rewarding for me than I could have imagined.

This shot really epitomizes the personal payoff for me. It was taken on Highway 1 between Davenport and San Gregorio, an area I had not really explored until I decided to take a drive out to the coast this past Wednesday evening. I took this on the way home after pacing up all my gear following a shoot at Shark Fin Cove (where I ran into fellow Flickr photographer Randall Harrison - check out his stream...it's awesome!). It's not my best work, but it's better than a lot of what I used to produce, and it's a scene I probably would never have stopped to fully take in, let alone attempt to capture.

I find myself looking at the visual world differently now, and I owe my Flickr (and Google+) contacts a big debt of gratitude for that. So a thank you!

I'll also throw Nikon a bone since without my gear none of this would be possible :)

I hope everyone's having a great weekend. If you can pry yourself away from Olympic coverage for a few hours, try venturing out somewhere you haven't been before, then shoot some awesome photos there!

I got a lot of really nice photos out of my recent trip to Massachusetts. This one was taken in the town of Cohasset, where my aunt and uncle live. There are several other recent shots in my photostream that were taken the same evening at sunset. What I loved about this spot was the bright green of the algae on the rocks - it was so neon-like in color.

"praise the lowered" | 1952 chevy bel air | the mission, san francisco

This is from Sunday Streets San Francisco a few weeks ago. It was taken in The Mission district, much of which was converted into a pedestrian mall for the day a few Sundays ago. Yep, they block off all the streets to motorized traffic and people get freely walk, skate and bike around the neighborhood. It was really fun, and there were lots of kids, teens, couples and families out enjoying the event.

On one of the side streets off 24th, I noticed a bunch of restored vintage cars out. I didn't have much time to stroll around, so I didn't get a chance to talk to the owner of this car or to do much of anything except quickly snap a few frames. It's a Chevy, but I wish I knew what model and year it is. Maybe someone will know. I assume that tubular thing that looks like a jet engine on the passenger side is some kind of heating or cooling unit, but I'm not sure.

I spent a good part of last week vacationing in the Boston area. On Tuesday some family members and I descended upon my aunt and uncle's house in Cohasset, Massachusetts. The sunset and the landscape were TOO AWESOME to pass up. Since I didn't have my tripod with me (it's not travel-friendly) this was handheld, which was a bit of a challenge. I may start looking for a lighter-weight-yet-stable tripod. I hear they're expensive, though and I need to replenish the piggy bank :)

fantastic fenway | boston

Hi everyone. I just got back from a five-day trip to visit family in Boston. Here's my first shot from the trip - I have several more to post from the Massachusetts coast and from downtown Boston, but I'm too tired to work on them now.

I grew up in Boston to parents who weren't much into sports. An uncle once took me to a Celtics game when I was 10 years old, but other than that, until last Sunday, I had never been to a professional sports game in my own hometown. In spite of still having family in Boston, these days I feel more like California (the SF Bay Area in particular) is my home. Still, being at Fenway Park surrounded by Boston accents and a very animated crowd felt very familiar. In spite of the Red Sox losing to the much-hated Yankees, it was a total blast being there, especially because I was with my girlfriend, one of my cousins and two close friends. Really, it was wonderful.

This image was made from five handheld exposures from my D800 with the amazing, fantastic Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 lens. The sky was just amazing that night -- dramatic, beautiful and almost ominous. Perhaps it was a supposed to be a foreshadowing of the Red Sox's fate that evening :)

As I mentioned, I have several other shots from my Boston trip to post. You'll be seeing those over the next few weeks. In the meantime, I hope everyone is gearing up for a great weekend.

This past Saturday I woke up at the crack of dawn to attend a photowalk in San Francisco's China Basin/Pier 96 area. I don't think I've ever been more glad to have had to wake up so early! The walk was a lot of fun, and I got to meet and interact with a bunch of fellow photo enthusiasts. This was my second photowalk ever (and the second in a month). I think I'm hooked. Much of my photo-taking is done on my own. That's not necessarily by choice, but I do enjoy the solitude of being out on my own snapping photos of landscapes. What I've discovered by adding the social element of the walk is that I am learning from others. Let's face it, on a photowalk you get a lot of people taking pictures of the same exact thing, but what's fascinating about that is that everyone's take is different. So you get a nearly immediate multiplicity of versions of the same scene, each as seen through a different photographer's eye -- it's pretty fascinating how different the results can be.

If you have a chance to go on a photowalk, I highly recommend it. Flickr sponsors lots of photowalks throught its parnership with MeetUp. Give it a try and see what you think.

I reworked this image at the suggestion of someone interested in buying it as a print. It's not that she didn't like the full color version; rather, she wanted to hang it in a place where this version would work better. She was really apologetic for suggesting changing it to selective color. I didn't mind at all because I actually really like it this way. Plus, it's not like I'm good enough to be offended by suggestions, especially not good ones. Some of my best work has been the result of someone's good suggestion, so I'm always keen to hear them.

footsteps in the sunset sand | san gregorio, ca

Sooooooo after two months of patiently waiting (really, I was patient....I didn't even email Amazon to try to get a firm delivery estimate or anything), my Nikon D800 arrived. Of course, wouldn't you know that it arrived at work on a day when I was telecommuting. Luckily, one of my co-workers was able to take delivery of it and drop it off to me on her way home. With all that build-up you'd think I would have started shooting with it immediately, but not so much. Instead, I drove to LA on Thursday evening and had busy days there on Friday and Saturday. I finally ended up getting out to shoot with my new rig on Monday evening. Yep, that's right, four full days after getting it....and without exploding either. Anyway, this is the first shot I worked on, so it's the first shot I'm posting. If you follow me in other places you've seen it there already because I uploaded it to Facebook, 500px and Google+ yesterday and today.

Using this new camera is such a pleasure. The thing I'm most in love with right now is just the sound of its shutter: it just sounds "professional."

About the photo: This was taken in San Gregorio, California, just off of Highway 1 south of Half Moon Bay. The wind was really calm that evening, there were a few sparse clouds and it was uncharacteristically warm -- a real rarity for June on the Northern California coast. Usually the inland heat draws cool air onto the coast from the Pacific, resulting in fog.

Anyway, this is the view looking north toward San Gregorio State Beach and Half Moon Bay. Behind me are Santa Cruz, and a little farther south Monterey.

I think Mother Nature rewarded my patience by making my first outing PERFECT.

My D800 arrived late last week, but I was away all weekend and was really busy, so I didn't get much of a chance to play with it. I'm really looking forward to starting to shoot with it. Special thanks to my girlfriend for not making too much fun of me for sneaking in some reading of the manual throughout the weekend :)

About this shot: this one's also from the 500px / Apple WWDC photowalk from a few weeks ago. This is the San Francisco skyline (part of it) and the SF Ferry Building as viewed from Pier 1. It was such a great sunset in spite of the lack of clouds.

I've been playing with using thinner horizontal black borders. I think I prefer them to the thicker borders I've been using (for example in this shot).

what can pru do for you | boston

I got so many great shots last week in Boston, mostly because the sky has the potential to be so much more interesting than here in Northern California. I got to be a bit of a tourist in my own hometown on this most recent trip, including this visit to the Prudential Center. This was made from five handheld exposures. In case I haven't mentioned it, I'm looking for a lightweight but sturdy tripod. Handheld shots like this are fine, but it would have been MUCH better with a tripod (and the one I have is 7+ lbs including the ball head). Suggestions welcome!

Well, I think this may be the only cable car shot I have in my entire photostream, which is saying a lot considering I've lived near (and snapped street scenes in) San Francisco for the entire time I've been on Flickr!
