Renown posted a photo:

Another snap taken in Middleton's yard on New Years Day 1980 with the benefit of a fixed lens! Ah well, I never really was a devotee of the petrol engined Bedford OB, though they did undoubtedly possess a quaint charm.
I've posted this because (I think) this motor was referred to in a comment made by 'Middleton Red' earlier today in connection with a picture I'd posted depicting various coaches from the Grand Edwardian Touring Co.
I regret that I know nothing about this particular coach's history, so perhaps the Rugeley based 'flickrites' can help?
Anyone know what became of FDV 548?

Historic Omnibuses.

Amongst the most unlikely buses we ever came across in our late '70s and early '80s South Wales tours were these Bedford OWBs with Rees of Crymmych. 'Berresfordsmotors' had made reference to their existence prior to this visit, but I must confess to being a little sceptical that such things were still available for service ... which they were at the time. JXX 461 sits at the rear of their premises in the company of cannibalised brethren in 1980, by which time it was like encountering the bus version of a dinosaur. Full credit must go to the company for keeping them serviceable for so long. The registration suggests it started life in the London area, and guessing, the bodywork would perhaps have been by Mulliner.

Wild open spaces, an OB and failing light.

Quite by chance whilst returning from the Kirkby Stephen event yesterday other than by my usual route, we came up behind this Bibby's of Ingleton liveried Bedford OB. The old girl was fair tanking along and overtaking it to gain a photo proved difficult for some time. Eventually I succeeded in doing so and getting sufficiently far ahead to get Mrs 'R's car off the road ... the manner of which caused me to be rebuked!
Whilst the OB isn't really my cup of tea (petrol engines will never catch on;-) Mrs 'R' approves along with a good deal of those more generally interested in 'nice' old motors. To be honest, the Bedford OB was real bread and butter hardware for many a post war British coach operator, indeed large numbers served faithfully for many years enabling their survival and preservation. Of all those built, it's perhaps those with Duple bodywork as seen here which are the true icons of the type.
