For golden light, there is a wonderful spot ten minutes from my warehouse that I call Golden Bowl. The morning light is golden-green and lasts long after I have to quit shooting due to the Poodle version of "baseball cap syndrome".

Note to self: Trim topknot over eyes. Many good shots ruined by hair covering eyes.

The trail is narrower here than the width between the outermost edges of the peddles on my bike. It has also sunk down to about a foot below grade. It's impossible to ride here and almost impossible to push. One has the choice of walking in the tangle of Salal, Rhododendron, fern, grasses and Huckleberry brush or pushing one's bike through it. Or you can push your bike from behind, leaning it this was and that to keep the front tire headed in the right direction. I was so intent on the task that I failed to notice the beauty of the hillside around me until Kim said, "Hannah, you should take a picture here."

Woke up this morning to a thin, coastal mist that I knew would burn off shortly, and by the time Ham, Fritz and I met Kim and Snow at the Human Bean, the sky was blue and studded with wispy clouds. We drove south down the coast and when we arrived at the trailhead at Cape Blanco Airport it was sunny and warm and breezy. We biked about eight miles, with the best part of the trail the fantastic views from Blacklock Point.

Last year Kim was laughing at the full suspension on my Rush 2 Fem and talking about how she didn't need all that (pavement junkie!), but today she was singing a different tune after fighting the roots on the trail. Now she's talking new bikes. Tee hee.

Last few days have seen low-hanging clouds and a smattering of misty rain. Nights have seen some serious storms. The boys, however, are not fair-weather dogs. They want to go out in rain, snow, sleet, sun and dark of night as long as there is hiking, biking, sniffing or ball chucking involved. But ask them to go out in the rain and pee, well, they'd rather hold it!

My little Fritter is on a diet. He's is looking a little chunky.

and a doggie nod to patriotism.

Actually, the boys have no patriotism except that which I assign them in my often anthropomorphic mind. They recognize no geographic boundaries and have no loyalty to an ideal, a culture, a religion or a way of life. They have no idea that they have better food, better water. better shelter, better hygiene and better medical care than a significant portion of the human race, including many in this country. They accept life as it comes. They are loyal to me and would be if I were wearing a sari, a burka, a turban or a hula skirt. That will never change. Although there is a sofa ten feet away, another couple of sofas twenty feet away and a cushy bed less than fifty feet away, they are here at my feet. When their blankets are being laundered, they are here as well, stretched out on the hard floor. And Griffen, silly boy, my shoes are his teddy.
A Beautiful Memorial on the Bay

This is a really lovely spot for a memorial. It used to be a gravel pull off with a trash can located on Highway 101 about a half mile from the McCullough Bridge leading into North Bend. Looking across the bay to the west are the sand dunes and to south a view of the bridge and the channel. There is a grassy area for the walking of dogs and a two spots for leaving donations, both doggie and monetary. I just realized yesterday that this memorial is maintained on donations so I will be more vigilant about leaving them. Perhaps I'll purchase an engraved paver.

I can state uncategorically that this image what not what I intended but at some point one just has to either trash the current image and start over, or do as I did, struggle to make something work that is just never going to. And of course I add stuff and try to cover up what I don't like and just manage to make it worse so in desperation I cut out a Ham's paw with the rose from an old pic and throw that into the empty corner. Now I'm thinking that I I probably should have gone with a less busy sky, one flag, the tile and the paw/rose with varying degrees of opacity. But I'm tired and the boys want their dinner.

Dang it, I want a do-over! I just had a really good idea. Sigh . . .

And so are the ticks.

About two minutes from my warehouse is this huge chunk of land, North Bend's unofficial dark park. It's located on one of the main arteries through North Bend, Virginia Avenue. I haven't been here in quite some time as we usually drive a few minutes farther to the North Spit where we can be quite alone. However, with so many ticks on our two favorite North Spit spots, we will probably utilize this more until the end of tick season.

There is a very nice view from here looking north across Pony Slough to the McCullough bridge and the North Spit. Turn around and you're looking at Pony Village mall and Safeway.

Briggs hasn't changed much since puppyhood. He still loves to tug, to eat, to train and most of all, to chase his ball. He is still cuddly and loving, still tends toward resource guarding with the other boys, he's still prone to stuck lip syndrome and he remains my barkiest boy. He was always a bold one, challenging Hamilton for the ball even as a baby and rushing in where angels fear to tread.

He was such a soft and fuzzy little ball of fluff as a baby. Here he is at two months old, weighing 10#. It was his tenth day living with me.

He always weighed a few pounds less than Fritz although they were the same height. Fritz was a bit of a porker. Here he is at five months of age and weighing 37#. He would not be diagnosed with MMM for another seven months.

And here he is this very day, four years old and weighing in at 59#. The MMM is behind us now but I can still see the damage it left in it's wake. His topknot hides the boniness of his skull but his prominent brow ridges are visible if you are looking. I don't care, though, I'm just glad he can eat normally and catch his beloved ball.

Some people tell me that they wish dogs would remain puppies forever. I don't feel that way. Puppyhood is fun and the babies are adorable, but what makes my relationship with my boys strong are our experiences together. I wouldn't trade that for any amount of cuteness.

Runs with Poodles posted a photo:

I loved this photo shoot. It took me way outside my comfort zone. I didn't want to just bend the rule (since I do that all the time), I wanted to throw the whole Rule of Thirds out the window. That left me feeling empty, though, so I decided to plan all my shots knowing that I would crop them square in PS. My goal was to fill the corners or the sides and keep my subject dead center. It was a bit difficult for me to visualize the results but I got several shots that I really like. I love these challenges because often they force me to do something I don't want to do or don't know how to do.

I feel a little guilty putting a cigarette in my beloved Mattie's mouth, but hey, today I wanted to mess around with smoke and I also felt like spending some time looking at his sweet face. He was such a good, true and loyal friend.

Very few people are aware that the original Into Darkness cast included five Poodles. The Poodles left the production due to irreconcilable differences between Paramount Pictures and the Poodle Guild. The Poodles received a sizable settlement but the figure remains undisclosed. This issue was under-reported by the media, probably due to their reluctance to put Paramount's large advertising budget at risk.

As Paul Harvey used to say, "And now you know . . . . the rest of the story."
