Went for a walk near the Mississippi River this evening and came across a nice pool of open water. Last year the farmers were already planting corn this time of year.
I can never resist wiggly reflections.

It has come to my attention that you have once again been observed eating sunflower seeds from a bird feeder located on the grounds of my residence. As you may surmise from its name, a "bird feeder" is intended to supply nutritional substances to birds, members of the biological class Aves, who are broadly defined as "feathered, winged, bipedal, endothermic, egg-laying, vertebrate animals". Though this may come as a bit of a surprise, you, sir, are not a bird; you are a rodent, a member of the class Mammalia, defined as "fur-bearing, quadripedal, endothermic, vertebrate animals who bear and nurse living young". To wit, you are not eligible for these particular nutritional benefits, which are exclusively reserved for birds. While I am sure this is all a simple misunderstanding on your part, it is imperative that you realize that the birds view your behavior as theft of property rightfully belonging to them and are prepared to take legal remedies for their perceived losses.

This is not an isolated incident and, although you and I have previously discussed this matter on several occasions, your behaviors have not changed and you have repeatedly consumed seed supplied for the convenience and nutrition of the birds. Therefore, I am hereby serving you with a cease and desist order requiring you, upon receipt of this notice, to immediately stop consuming sunflower seeds, or any other seeds, from this or any other bird feeder located on the grounds of my residence. In addition, I am serving you with a restraining order that prohibits you from approaching closer than 100 feet to this same bird feeder at any time. May I also remind you that any retaliation against the birds is strictly prohibited and will be dealt with swiftly and severely.

I hope we understand each other and that we may put this matter behind us.

One additional note: Please stop chasing the birds; they find your amorous advances unwelcome.

Sincerely,

This marsh lies along the floodplains of the Cannon River in east central Minnesota a few miles from Redwing, Minnesota. it's one of my favorite places to stop along the Cannon Valley Trail. The bird watching is great here, with hummingbirds, warblers, waterbirds, hawks, and eagles.

If you head west from Itasca State Park in Minnesota along Highway 113, you will wind along a scenic route through the heavily forested Alexandria Moraine, up and down hills, with curve following curve. If you continue westward the road begins to straighten out, the trees become scarce, and the landscape flattens and becomes more subdued. And if you follow it a few miles further you end up in the Red River Valley of the North, the remnant lake bed of Glacial Lake Agassiz, and one of the flattest places on earth.

This photo was taken a few miles west of the Alexandria Moraine well before we got to the Red River Valley. The grasslands that once grew here were part of the great prairies that covered much of the Great Plains of the US. Once the home of herds of bison, most of the land has been put to the plow, yielding some of the richest agricultural lands in the world. The area where this photo was taken was mostly devoted to grazing, which left most of it in grass.

Photo taken early last October on a cloudy afternoon.

The sun and clouds in this sunset look almost like a fireball streaking across the sky. A calm and beautiful evening on the Chesapeake Bay, this shot was taken a few minutes before the earlier sunset shot in my photostream.

The tower on the right is a "penlight", a narrow-beamed navigational light that marks the shipping channel as it turns northwestward across the Bay.

Although this photo was taken directly into the sun with an older wide-angle Nikkor AIS lens, no flares are visible in the image. Pretty good for a 30+ year old lens...

As they say: "A bad day fishing beats a good day at work." Nothing like a little downtime to recharge the soul.

Sunset over the Chesapeake Bay from a short vacation last fall with a couple of my friends to the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The first night had a spectacular sunset, enhanced by sitting out on a deck above the Bay, eating fresh seafood, and drinking Yuengling Black & Tans.

Mmmmm! Life is good!

I finally finished off this roll of Ektar from my trip. My life is slowly getting back to normal after selling my house and moving, so I hope to be a more active member of Flickr in the coming months.

Thank you all, my friends, for your many kind thoughts and comments these last couple of months. They're greatly appreciated.

I took a stroll through Grass Lake the other night - the park crews have cleaned out a lot of the underbrush, mostly invasive species like buckthorn. It looked very different from the last time I was there.

This is a heavy crop on a digital image, but it conveys the open understory that is now present - quite a change from earlier this year!
