Hedgehog at Night - Introduction

My passion of hedgehogs started few years ago, when my father found a small hedgehog crossing the road, with all the dangers of being smashed by cars, so he picked it up and put it in our garden to live safely and prevent it from getting out to the street again.

After few months later, my great father found another one, again trying to cross the road!
Picked it up and put it in the garden, for our wonderful luck, we discovered that they are male and female, when we started to find tiny spiky balls, in the size of a golf ball, walking around!

As I’m crazy about almost all kinds of animals, crazy most of the time :) , I found them very interesting creatures and magnificently cute :)

Finally he decided to be cute, of course all of them are cute, but this one just realized who I am, and I couldn’t resist taking these funny cute shots for him while he was trying hard to free himself, and click click click we’re done again.

This time I think I had enough cuteness for one night, looking forward for a new night some time :)

I put him beside his brother in the same place behind the rock, and just looking at them leaving away is enough to break my heart :(

It’s beautiful to feel excited about some thing you really like or you can feel yourself in, I had the whole day taking shots for almost every thing, on the ground, animals, insects, flowers, roses..., and in the sky, sun, clouds, trees...., but these shots of the little hedges I’ve taken in few seconds are priceless comparing with the others.

That night I was really so happy with my treasure of photos, and couldn’t wait to connect my camera to the computer to see them and figure out some titles for them, then I realized after a while that I completely forgot about the dinner! and the shoes as well :)

Later at that night I heard the rustle sound again some where else in the garden, and I saw a third bigger one running fast hiding from the search-light I had in my hand, no don’t worry I wasn’t planning to follow him, but I just felt tranquil that they are living every where and if I made them flee away from one place they will find another :)

It’s so wonderful experience to have a time, no matter how short, with the animals, they are just a source of peace and love.

Hedgehogs live any where in the gardens or woods, their favorite place to dig their holes in is under a big mass of broken woods or old autumn leaves, they get out only at night, they don’t get out at day light very much, at least the old ones because they are more cautious and careful, but the babies are some kind stupid that they always get out at the day light so they can be picked up by a crazy girl - like me - to take photos for them :)

Actually not any more, it’s too hard to find them now in the morning, I wonder is it because they know about me, or they are just preparing for hibernation? I don’t know, but in either case I have to wait for the next year, and I’m much grateful for having these moments with them.

Hi all my friends, as many of you asked me to write information about hedgehogs, here is a brief:

Hedgehogs live any where in the gardens or woods, their favorite places to dig their holes are under a big mass of broken woods or old autumn leaves, they get out only at night, they don’t get out at day light very much, the old ones of them because they are more careful and know more about the dangers out at the day, but the babies are some kind stupid that they always get out at the day light so they can be picked up by a crazy girl - like me - to take photos for them :D

They don’t bite, they are so calm and tender, they just try to run away and hid, and when they feel danger or are picked up, they “roll” themselves inside, the babies don’t prick a lot so you can hold them, but the old ones…. yes they prick soooo much :D but you can hold them too with more carefulness.

They can beget 5 or 6 babies at a time (some how like rabbits), when they are just born, they do not have any single spine, they have a very soft pink skin, they grow up to become about the size of a football.

They eat almost every thing, bugs, plants, old leaves, rice or seeds, fruits…

Some people raise them as pets at home, but ours are just living in our garden, the story is this: few years ago, my father found the first small one was crossing the road with all the cars there, so he picked him up to save him from crashing under the cars and put him in our garden, a little while after that he found another one, for our so wonderful luck, they were male and female :D and they’ve got all the little cute ones you saw in my picture.

He couldn’t just stay stabled to take him a beautiful photo, so I took this so funny one while he was trying hard to get out of my hand :D

Oh my god I feel bad, I feel I drove him crazy :D but he is so cute that I couldn’t let him go easily, when I took him back to his home I found his brother, so I put him beside to feel safe again, I went back to see them again, of course they were all disappeared, I can imagine him saying to his brothers : “don’t you ever get out, there is a crazy girl out there !!!!!“

But please tell me, doesn’t he make you mad about him ! :D

that what I was waiting for, for a long time, the new hedgehogs to come out in our garden, and I couldn't believe myself when I saw it, his cuteness could cause me a heart attack :D I took tens of photos for him in few minutes while he was trying hard to get out of my hand :D this is one of them...

You wake me up to take that picture !

One night, while we were having the dinner, I heard a sound, a lovely familiar rustle sound, I jumped from my seat and yelled “I found him I found him”, with all the wondering looks of my family and my two brother saying “are you crazy, we thought you’ve been stung by something”.

Of course I couldn’t think about any thing else that moment, I left every thing from my hands and ran fast with bare feet to the garden (sorry there was no time for wearing shoes), towards one target, behind the rock.

And there, oh yes, I found the little spiky hiding behind the rock after he heard all the screaming and realized that a nightmare is going to start, I picked him up and the nightmare started :)

Holding him and running directly to my camera, to take this historical moment in a memorable photo before he had a heart attack, click click click and we’re done, but the little naughty spiky boy thought: we have been alerted that there is a crazy girl out there at day light ramble around, now what the hell she’s doing here at night?!!

So he tried to bite me, starting with my auricular finger the closest to his mouth, but no don’t worry he didn’t hurt me, but I felt so sorry for him and put him back in the same place again, despite I didn’t have enough from his cuteness, but, safety first :)
I mean his safety not mine :)

Walking back and feeling sorry for having a very short time with my love, and still walking bare feet, I saw some thing in the dark like a little rock beside the water bucket of the bees (means that we put this bucket for the bees, as well as other animals, to drink from, but it is used most by bees) so I wondered “this rock wasn’t here few minutes ago!”, and yes my sixth sense told me “it’s another one baby!”.

I picked him up, and yes he is another one, he was drinking also from that bucket and wallowed his cute feet and little nose with mud, having the same reactions I ran again yelling “I found another one I found another one”, with all the same wondering looks from my family and saying “oh dear... hope this night will pass safely...”, he didn’t want at first to get out from his fortress spiky ball, just had a peek look at me, I think the poor little fellow is a newbie and didn’t have this experience before :)
