The full 4 inch perforated pipe took up too much space in the planter so I cut the pipe in half following the seam which already exists on the pipe. These pipes are easily cut with a good pair of scissors. I ended up placing landscape cloth over the pipe before inserting the pipe into the planter.

My beds are only 8 inches deep so I cut the 4 inch perforated pipes in half and laid them out lengthwise. I trimmed them so they would lay flat inside the bed. My beds had drainage holes so I had to make them waterproof . I trimmed a large piece of plastic so it came up and over the edge of the bed. Be careful with this process as you don't want to poke holes in the plastic. This bed holds 6 gallons of water. I levelled the bed and then filled it up with six gallons to determine where my overflow hole would be located and then I drilled the overflow hole into the frame and pushed it gently through the plastic lining. I used this method of construction as a model for the rest of the beds.I ended up using a heavy weight clear plastic in the five other beds I converted.

This is an old metal tub. In my final design I made sure the plastic insert came up and over the black Foundation Waterproofing Membrane. The overflow drains out through the existing holes at the bottom of the metal tub. A series of small holes are cut into the plastic insert at the overflow level and the membrane provides a space around the inside of the container so the water can drain easily.

All pots and beds have to be level for the sub irrigation system to work. Notice the overflow tube. It is small but it works. Each bed holds 6 gallons of water.

Note the different couplers. I cut pieces from the 4" stiff perforated pipe used in landscape or irrigation. The Flex-drain pipe is also 4" but it fits nicely into the other pipe. I cut my water shaft holes with scissors and placed a piece of old bike tubing over the hole to prevent soil from falling into perforated pipe. Walk into your local bike shop and ask them for old bicycle tubes. They throw them out. If your holes are tight you can skip the bike tube procedure.

Update April 2, 2012. I do not use bike tubing any longer since I now use landscape cloth or I purchase the Flex-drain pipe with a landscape sock on it already. It is more expensive but saves the addition of the landscape cloth procedure. I still use smart water bottles because of their shape and durability. I peel off the labels and clear off the glue. They stack well.

I have two flourishing zucchini plants growing in two Lechuza Quadro planters and a flourishing tomato plant growing in the homemade 5 gallon pail/20 litre pail.
