The Amazon Kingfisher ranges from southern Mexico, through Central America down to northern Argentina.
It resembles the Green Kingfisher which shares its range, but it is much larger and is three to four times as heavy. It is approximately 12 inches long, the Green more typically 8 inches long.
Here is one perched on a branch just above the water, ready to plunge head first.

I saw these for the first time last year in Brazil. The Southern Lapwing (Vanellus chilensis) is a wader, it is common and widespread throughout South America.

It is a fierce defender of its territory and will swoop at anyone approaching, trying to strike them with the spurs that it has built into the underside of its wings.

I've been trying to show that in a photo but haven't had too much luck yet.

I was so glad on the last day of our stay at the Flotel that we decided to do one last boat trip up & down the river - - we had had 7 jaguar sightings already - - but this last one was the best of all - - a mother and 2 cubs - - the second cub is out of frame chasing some birds down the beach.

The jaguar is a big cat, a feline in the Panthera genus, and is the only Panthera species found in the Americas. The jaguar is the third-largest feline after the tiger and the lion, and the largest in the Western Hemisphere.

This particular area had some males as large as 290 lbs - - very large - - very unusual for the spieces.

The biologist who is developing this area actually pays the local ranchers $70,000 per year to not shoot the cats.

I had trouble getting some of my bird shots due to other wildlife but you do what you have to.

The Black Vulture also known as the American Black Vulture, is a bird in the New World vulture family whose range extends from the southeastern United States to Central Chile and Uruguay in South America.

I really thought these were about to become lunch for this female jaguar.
