This shot is one that doesn't really fit in anywhere. It was taken as material for an album cover for Devil Doll, who at that moment were signed to Geffen (but were dropped soon after, along w/ 70% of WEA's roster as WEA consolidated/closed down all its labels and folded them into Interscope). It's Hasselblad, so it has crazy precision (I never liked Hasselblads because their optics are too good). We had two snakes, a tarantula, lots of roses, a dog, a gun, the singer...and a nut we rented the studio from who was convinced we stole a bunch of his gear. (He found it the next week but never apologized).

Winter at the bar, Golden Gopher, downtown LA, May 1998. Golden Gopher was the bar of an SRO hotel a block off Broadway. It was a step up from a wino bar, and nice for downtown at that time 'cause it wasn't full of crackheads and crackhead hookers. But it wasn't exactly a hipster hangout. We went there 'cause Winter's loft was around the corner. Within a few years the area was all lofts full of trust-fund kids ('cause artists could no longer afford to live there) and the Golden Gopher was a hipster hangout.

1998. American Pie starlet Shannon Elizabeth, shot for Bikini Raygun magazine. A doctored-by Devo's Mark Morthersbaugh version of this shot appeared on the cover of While You Were Sleeping magazine, a rad graffiti-art based East Coast mag that published an unfortunately mean-spirited article on Shannon Elizabeth.

1998. Actress Shannon Elizabeth, shot for Bikini Raygun magazine. Bikini/Raygun was an awesome mag but their art directors had a habit of doing weird things to photographers' work, which was the case with this shot. This shot (which was me ripping my own self off by copying directly a shot I'd done earlier in the year with a drag queen friend) was cropped severely tight, and lost most of what I thought made it good. Oh well. It was their magazine, and the check (when I eventually received it) cleared the bank, so all is good.

My Holga double exposures were always accidental, which means they were generally intended to be consecutive photos and consequently things line up in a way that makes more sense than if I'd've contrived them.

My buddy T. in his bungalow up on Echo Park, February 1998. T. at this moment was struggling with a bunch of stuff, most of it zeroing in on a nostalgia for times that while much harder were also much simpler. He remembered being a little hispanic gay punk rocker, homeless, living in a box on a vacant lot, and to me it did not sound very good, but to him it did.

Good, bad, in-between - all were immediate in this nostalgic vision. Needs were immediate. Love was immediate. Shelter was immediate. Things like career and where-is-this-relationship-going and staying off booze and drugs forever or at least well into the future and all that complicated future stuff that trips some of us up 'cause we go straight to worst case scenario were not an issue for him when he was living in a box and the future didn't extend beyond whatever all-ages punk show was going on that night.

T. was on pain meds due to a back injury, and pain meds can get dangerous. The jones was coming back and probably accounted for this hard nostalgia. About 2 weeks after we took this shot he ended up going on a run that started at a GBH show in Hollywood and ended only a few days later in a psych ward in Pasadena.
