In the Smokies, there is so much running water - every valley has a river or stream flowing through it. Most of the water comes down from the heights of the mountains, so this means waterfalls - lots and lots of waterfalls. In fact, so many waterfalls that I think many of them go unnamed. This pretty little waterfall cascaded down the mountainside in a number of drops. We found the stream on the map (we think) but didn't see the falls named.

The Oconaluftee River flows down the North Carolina side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It's a beautiful waterway consisting of countless cascades and rapids. I probably could have spent an entire morning shooting along the river, but with lots of places to see and things to do, I settled for a few quick snaps on the first evening we arrived in the park.

Here's another long exposure carnival ride from the Rockingham County Fair! I loved the light streams this particular ride made. I wanted to keep some color in the sky, so I shot at twilight (just a couple minutes after the sun went down). The shutter was open for ten seconds on this shot.

The ride was one of those with a "ship" at the end of a pendulum. It swings back and forth until it finally has enough momentum to make a full circle.

The top section of the falls is large and spectacular, but the bottom section has its own unique beauty in the rock chute through which the water passes.

It's a really popular/crowded area, but definitely worth checking out.
I had hoped to get some nice wider-scene shots of grist mill, but the sky was just too "blah". I kind of liked this detail shot I took with my telephoto a bit better than the wide scene (below).

I hope you won't get bored with waterfall/stream shots - because I took many during our time in New Hampshire. This is the Sentinel Pine Bridge as it crosses Cascade Brook in the Flume Gorge area.
Franconia Notch State Park - New Hampshire

[Christine] posted a photo:

I just got home after a week in the White Mountains of New Hampshire! We had really nice weather - especially compared to the heat wave we've been experiencing at home in Virginia. Most days were in the upper seventies or low eighties. We did some hiking. Ate lots of pancakes, which seem to be a big deal in the area... I guess because of all the maple syrup the region produces. We even got to meet up again with the Appalachian Trail hikers we met earlier this summer.

This shot is from the Basin area of Franconia Notch State Park. We took a couple short walks/hikes in this area - one around Flume Gorge (blogged) and the other up to Kinsman Falls (blogged). There is so much beautiful water in New Hampshire. If you're into streams, lakes and waterfalls - the White Mountains are like heaven!

This shot would have been nicer if I had remembered to carry my circular polarizer... but you get the idea. I chose a shorter exposure than I typically do with running water. The stream was moving so fast that I would have lost all detail in the water if I left the shutter open much longer.

Around the Bend - Shenandoah National Park

[Christine] posted a photo:

Fall is always really busy in Shenandoah National Park. Often on nice weekend days, people have to wait upwards of an hour or more just to get past the fee station. Luckily, it was pouring down rain for most of Saturday, so I didn't have to wait in line at all.

The downside was that it took *forever* to get cars to pass by with their lights on for this shot. I think I stood in the same spot for almost half an hour. People probably wondered what the heck I was doing. I ended up settling for a two-car passing.

This shot didn't come out exactly like I wanted. I wish the wind would have stayed calm. I also wish that more cars would have passed by in quick succession. That would have made much nicer, more complete light trails. As soon as I packed up my gear and walked back to the car, five cars went by, practically bumper to bumper.

Douglas Falls

Douglas Falls is mostly surrounded by rhododendrons, mountain laurels and evergreens, so there wasn't a lot of fall color there. Since I've already shared so many photos of the main waterfall, I decided to head downstream and explore the stream a bit.

On this particular trip to Douglas Falls, I had the pleasure of meeting fellow Flickrite ransang. He was already at the falls when we arrived. We only had a chance to chat briefly, but it was still fun to make a name-face connection. If you see this, Randy - it was nice to meet you.

On our whirlwind one-day trip to Canaan Valley, we managed to visit Canaan Valley State Park, Blackwater Falls State Park, Douglas Falls, Dolly Sods and Seneca Rocks. We did a lot of hiking and managed to even find time to eat some pizza at Sirianni's.

There's a post on our blog about some of the short, scenic walks you can do in the area.

Walking up to Flume Gorge - Franconia Notch State Park, New Hampshire

[Christine] posted a photo:

On the Monday of our New Hampshire week, we stayed really busy. Adam and I woke up around 6:00 a.m. to hike the Mt. Morgan - Mt. Percival loop trail. The hike is about 5.5 miles and has beautiful views of the Squam Lakes. There are also some caves to climb through and a ladder affixed to a cliff face that you scale to the summit. It was a beautiful, cool morning - but the view was backlit, so no great photo opps (see below). The only drawback to this hike - and it's a biggie - was the bug activity. I have never encountered mosquitoes, bees, wasps and biting flies like the ones I did in New Hampshire. They were hell on wings. Despite being liberally coated with DEET, I came home with SIXTEEN enormous, swollen mosquito bites and a painful wasp sting on my ankle. The two days proceeding this hike may have been the two itchiest days in my entire life.

When we got back from the hike, we decided to drive up to Franconia Notch State Park to see Flume Gorge with my parents. Flume Gorge was beautiful! You can either take a bus ride and walk only the quarter mile through the actual gorge, or take the longer two mile loop hike around the entire area and see a lot more stuff. The crowd is significantly thinner outside the actual gorge, as most people seem to stick to the bus ride option.

Flume Gorge itself was nearly impossible to photograph on this day. The boardwalk was narrow, bouncy and heavily trafficked. If I tried to use my tripod, it totally blocked the passageway for others. I had better luck getting a few photos at other places along the loop trail.

Swallow Falls State Park is is Garrett County, Maryland. There are several larger falls at the park, but tiny Tolliver Falls is (in my opinion) more photogenic.

Rose River Loop Hike - Shenandoah National Park

Yesterday, Adam and I got up early and headed to SNP to hike the Rose River Loop trail. It's our Thanksgiving tradition to go for a morning hike before digging into our gigantic Thanksgiving feast.

The Rose River and Hog Camp Branch are still suffering from unusually low water levels. It was also really sunny, so instead of shooting waterfall and stream scenes, I focused mostly on ice formations and small isolated runs of water. We've had a colder than average November, and a lot of the trail was covered with ice, frost and snow. We didn't see a single person out on the trail, but we saw a bunch of deer, a big hawk and a yearling bear.

Going to the Smokies? Want to go on a very easy hike to a beautiful waterfall? Then visit Laurel Falls!

The 1.3 mile path to the falls is paved (so it's barely a hike) and climbs very gradually uphill. This photo just shows the top half of the falls. The lower half lies off the trail and can be accessed with a short and easy rock scramble.

After Dark in Acadia National Park

I knew I was going to have a busy couple weeks, I just had no idea how busy! I had the first weekend of my art show last weekend. It was a lot of work to get ready for the show - packaging prints, pricing items, hanging displays, etc. I didn't have high expectations, and was expecting to maybe sell one or two pieces. I ended up selling twelve. My show is ongoing for the next two weekends. After that, hopefully my life will return to a normal pace.

The shot above is from my Acadia trip last month. We decided to drive the park loop road a little bit after sunset. We climbed down a small path and over a bunch of rocks to reach this lovely cobblestone beach. I took this photo about 15 minutes after the sun went down, while some color was still lingering in the sky. I think the shutter was open for 30 seconds here.
