Yesterdays New Years Eve definitely was the best ever in terms of photography.

We spent the afternoon with chatting, drinking, and playing games, and for midnight we went to an amazing location that I have been to only once before, at the first of may 2011.
A huge roof in the middle of Berlin, from where you can overlook the whole city and where you get a 360 degree view of the fireworks. For me, especially the combination of the subway and tram in the foreground, and the masses of fireworks in the background made this place magical for me.

This image should give you a good impression of how it was.

Thank you to Aya and Johannes for this amazing trekking day, the laughs we shared and the amazing photographs that resulted. They really get the feeling of this day across! Yay!

And really, I am so glad that I took this shot with the 5D Mark II and not with my old 40D. The quality, even at a high zoom level is just more than impressive.

This is a truly "old" shot, that I took in Chile in 2010.
I looked through my archives because Getty Images Want is looking for images from Santiago, and found this shot. Mona told me I should definitely upload this one, and I followed her advice.
I think she was right.

Last weekend I took the time to stroll through the city, exploring places that I know, but that I havent visited in a long time.
It was a big fun, I had time to get used to my new camera, and also shot some frames that I like.

I do that much too rarely, a fact that needs to be changed.

Cleaning the Quadriga

The Brandenburg Gate is a place for tourists. Usually I don't see any reason to go there. I don't like the place, its too clean in my opinion and pretty much boring. Nevertheless, out of coincidence I happened to be there just when a few workers were up at the quadriga (the figure on top of the Gate) to clean it.

A big reason why I don't like these spots is, that every inch of it has been photographed before, and I just don't feel the urge to take my camera out.

Such situations like the one I photographed are unsual and special...and extremely rare.
To be there at the right time is almost impossible.

I have no idea how often they clean the figure, but I would guess it doesnt happen more than twice a year. I felt really lucky being there, since it gave me the chance to put some perspective on these huge figures high above our heads that everyone in the city knows.

I like this shot a lot, especially the connection of the heads and how the equestrian seems to watch the cleaner doing his work. It almost feels like he is about to say: "Hey, you forgot that one stain on the side"!

After shooting for around 15 minutes, my arms started to hurt because of the uncomfortable position and the heavy camera, but I knew I had something.

Lesson learned. Even though the touristic spots are boring, you should go there from time to time and see what you can find.

This is the second shot from my last vacation with Mandy, but nevertheless I did not take this in London but in Berlin, or rather above Berlin.
It was the first time that I came back to Berlin at such a perfect time, just when the sunset set in.
It was beautiful, and when the plane finally turned for the landing, the view was just amazing.
This picture cannot reproduce the beauty of this moment, but it comes close I think.

Can you spot the TV Tower?

I still like Berlin.

For those who are interested, you can find a BEFORE AND AFTER of this shot on my website.

In the BEFORE AND AFTER I also detail the single steps that I took in the processing.

I took this shot while UrbExing last weekend end together with Robert and Basti.
I had the idea to move the horse into the middle of the room, and the combination of the horse and the ceiling of the room worked much better than I had expected.

The processing took a while, you can see a RAW-image of this shot over on my website.

This weekend was amazing.
First I was celebrating my 1 1/2 year anniversary with Mandy. We went to a wonderful picturesque island in Berlin and photographed together all day long.
Then yesterday I had my first serious portrait shoot. We met early in the morning and went to two different locations. I am really happy with the results, and I believe, so is the model. These were shoot for his actor portfolio, and I enjoy them a lot.
I am especially happy with the results since I am usually not into portraits at all. I am trying to improve in that section, and yesterday was a good start. Lets see where that leads...

This was the very last shot of my Belgium trip, and for this reason I would have almost forgotten to view it. My plane shots are usually nothing that I consider worth showcasing, so I usually skip them while looking through my album.

This time I knew that I had gotten this shot, and so I knew what I was looking for when I listed my favourites.

The simplicity paired with the perspective and the city that shines through the clouds fascinates me, and I even think about framing this one. Its a real traveller pic, and certainly the best one I ever took from an airplane.

Look at it in large, its worth it.

If you like my photography you shouldnt miss THIS

UPDATE: I got a cropping suggestion and like it much better this way

I published an article about this photo on my blog! Read it here!

I am back with a ton of new photographs that I really like.
It was an awesome week in Belgium, and it was more than good in terms of photography.

I stayed in Knokke at the beach and, together with my friends Axel, I went to Gent, Antwerp, Bruges, Charleroi and UrbExing in an incredible location.

I shot everything from rainbows to robots, from nuclear plants to romantic night views, from fireworks to museums.
It was a really full week and it could hardly have been more contrasty.

I will publish my results in the following days and weeks, so...keep followin!

This one is a rather old shot, from my Tuscany trip in September 2010.
It had it lying around, postprocessed, but was really unsure about publishing it.
Now that I looked at it again I decided to finally do it.

We visited Carrara and went hiking in the mountains to see the marble mines and the incredible view from up the mountaintop. It was one of the best day trips of the whole holiday (I could not decide whether Cinque Terre were even better) and I was more than impressed by the mining action.
This shot gives a pretty good impression, especially in terms of ratios.

The truck you see is a transporting truck, who conveys mined marble from inside the mountain to a storing place. From there they are either shipped or refined for sale.
There are several small stores that sell refined marble items at reasonable prices, I am sure you dont get them as cheap as there anywhere else in the world.

Its just crazy, impressive and unbelievable.
And the city Carrara is not less interesting, its build completely from marble!
A must see location in my opinion.
