Shot with Canon EOS 5D Mark II + Samyang 14mm f/2.8

Today I finally went shooting in the city again, and it was pretty interesting. I got the exclusive chance to shoot in one very old and historical building near Alexanderplatz (thank you Christof) and did some Street Photography after that.

This shot was taken near the construction site where the new U5 subway connection is build. This viewing tower, the crane and the clouds worked together just perfectly.

Oh, and there are only three weeks left until I am leaving for Asia.

You can follow my preparations here

the night is ours

Shot with Canon EOS 5D Mark II + Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS USM

After exploring Chicago at daytime and finding it relatively dull, I decided I might have to see the downtown area at night in order to get a real feel for the place. Also, to see the streets less crowded than at the daytime was something that I thought might be interesting.

So I went out with Jonny, and we explored a good part of the city centre and it was definitely worth it. Even though the bean was not accessible anymore as it closes at 11PM, I still got to shoot quite a bit. I really liked it, and I would definitely consider Chicago a night city. Its just a lot more interesting.

Looking forward to round 2 tonight.

Oh, and I document my whole trip on my blog, so if you are interested, please visit me!
I don't like Valentines Day. In my opinion this is simply a marketing invention of the flower and greeting card mafia. If you like or love someone, do you really need an official date to tell the person? Isnt it much nicer if a person tells you that they like you, on a normal day, without any special reason or date?

But thats only my reason. Today image is for everyone who had a not so good Valentines Day yesterday. Let me tell you:
between the highways

Shot with Canon EOS 5D Mark II + Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS USM

Yesterday I went to Milwaukee together with Donna and her sister. The trip was organized by Donna and I liked the idea, especially because this meant that I would finally see a larger american city.

After arriving we first visited the Milwaukee Art Museum with its beautiful sailboat-like architecture. I really liked that place and can only recommend going there. BTW: You dont even have to pay admission if you only want to see the architecture.

After leaving the museum, we split up and I started discovering the city on my own. I wandered around the street, through small alleys and dark corners.
Even though the sun was not present for most of the time and the lighting was therefore rather dull, I liked the gritty feeling this city has to it, without looking decayed. I especially enjoyed seeing all the structures, patched up walls and other signs of time.

What I found surprising was that even though it was a saturday afternoon, almost no people were on the street. So, at least from my impression the city is not really a perfect place for street photography.

I think I will definitely try to come back to Milwaukee before leaving, hopefully on a sunnier day where hopefully the lighting inside these alleys is more interesting and probably there are even more people on the street then.
Cleaning the Quadriga

Shot with Canon EOS 40D + Canon 70-200mm f/4L USM

The Brandenburg Gate is a place for tourists. Usually I don't see any reason to go there. I don't like the place, its too clean in my opinion and pretty much boring. Nevertheless, out of coincidence I happened to be there just when a few workers were up at the quadriga (the figure on top of the Gate) to clean it.

A big reason why I don't like these spots is, that every inch of it has been photographed before, and I just don't feel the urge to take my camera out.

Such situations like the one I photographed are unsual and special...and extremely rare.
To be there at the right time is almost impossible.

I have no idea how often they clean the figure, but I would guess it doesnt happen more than twice a year. I felt really lucky being there, since it gave me the chance to put some perspective on these huge figures high above our heads that everyone in the city knows.

I like this shot a lot, especially the connection of the heads and how the equestrian seems to watch the cleaner doing his work. It almost feels like he is about to say: "Hey, you forgot that one stain on the side"!

After shooting for around 15 minutes, my arms started to hurt because of the uncomfortable position and the heavy camera, but I knew I had something.

Lesson learned. Even though the touristic spots are boring, you should go there from time to time and see what you can find.

Shot with Canon EOS 40D + Canon 70-200mm f/4L USM

I felt a bit like a stalker shooting this image, but I guess sometimes thats what you need to do in order to capture authentic moments.

This couple spent its evening in the Lustgarten (Garden of Lust) and I found them to be too beautiful to not shoot them.

BTW: I totally forgot to write about my most recent Flickr achievement.
I hit the 2.000.000 Click Mark (2 million) on August 15.
I am very proud of that, and honestly want to thank everyone for visiting my stream so regularly, leaving comments, sending mails and just keep viewing my updates.
THANK YOU FLICKR, YOU ARE AWESOME!!!

I had to look up when I hit the 1.000.000 click count, in order to deliver some facts.

I hit the 1.000.000 click count on March 02 2011, which means that it took me 17 months and 12 days to get the next 1 million clicks. This is a total of 532 days and averages about 1879 clicks per day.

I am very proud of that, and hope that the next million will add up even faster.
Thank you, and keep clicking!

Shot with Canon EOS 40D + Canon EF 24-105mm 1:4,0 L IS USM

I have a unexplainable tendency to dislike blurred photos (but only if I have shot them).
I like many artistic blur shot from other artists, but I got this feeling in my heart, that when a shot is blurred, I failed as a photographer. Its stupid, but I cannot change it.
In this case it is different, and this is why I like it so much.

This was the second or third frame of the shot, I took some more after it, and all of them were much sharper, but they did not convey the feeling as good as this one does.
The scene was about the motion, and it needs blur.
It was amazing, especially since I arrived just on time for the blue hour.

I would like to read your opinion. Do I like it only because its blurred or is there something to it?
Be honest, I appreciate your comment!!

Shot with Canon EOS 40D + Canon 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro

This weekend was amazing.
First I was celebrating my 1 1/2 year anniversary with Mandy. We went to a wonderful picturesque island in Berlin and photographed together all day long.
Then yesterday I had my first serious portrait shoot. We met early in the morning and went to two different locations. I am really happy with the results, and I believe, so is the model. These were shoot for his actor portfolio, and I enjoy them a lot.
I am especially happy with the results since I am usually not into portraits at all. I am trying to improve in that section, and yesterday was a good start. Lets see where that leads...

Shot with Canon EOS 40d + Tamron 18-200mm

I took this yesterday when I went to one of my favourite abandoned places in Berlin.
From what I have heard, this place is about to get teared down because there are plans to build a hardware store instead.
As if we havent got enough hardware stores. Puh!

I have been there several times before, but this time many things had changed.
In the fourth floor we discovered a whole room full of candles, beer bottles and a stage, as if there was an illegal party during the last days.
In the rooms around this party place, the rooms have been designed by artists.
One created artworks from duct tape, others painted the rooms.
All of them were special, but this one impressed me most.
One room full of these little babies. Crazy! And impressive!

Why do they tear this down? Its a shame!

Allday Wonders

Crazy Ivory posted a photo:

Shot with Canon EOS 40D + Tamron 18-200mm

This was the very last shot of my Belgium trip, and for this reason I would have almost forgotten to view it. My plane shots are usually nothing that I consider worth showcasing, so I usually skip them while looking through my album.

This time I knew that I had gotten this shot, and so I knew what I was looking for when I listed my favourites.

The simplicity paired with the perspective and the city that shines through the clouds fascinates me, and I even think about framing this one. Its a real traveller pic, and certainly the best one I ever took from an airplane.

Look at it in large, its worth it.

This one is from the photowalk with Ole and Leif through Oslo.
The whole cityscape and landscape in the more rural suburbs of Oslo is just more than photogenic. Its also very quiet and relaxing to be there.
I enjoyed it a lot!
