State of the Record Industry 2011

This is the interior of what was Tower Records on Broadway. Back in "the day" (which for me was the 80s) this was the must go to shrine for any college student. The store was pretty much killed by Napster/mp3s/iTunes by the end of 2006. My thinking is that when the space is filled the recession in NYC will officially be dead. Some of the very top space on a floor or two above is this is now a gym so I guess we're getting there slowly...

Chemical Abstracts Cover: Volume 37 Number 18 from September 20, 1943

michaeljamespinto posted a photo:

True story: From about 1992 until 1996 my company was sub-leasing space at 132 West 22nd Street from a photographer. At the time the building was a mix of various companies many of which were creative that had loft spaces. However before that era once upon a time the building was for industrial companies — and the owner was City Chemical. About that time I believe they still had one floor left but then sold the building. As a result I spotted in the trash tons of their old archives — which included this trade publication cover that I grabbed.

What's funny to me is that the cover has a bit of a romantic undertone to it — there's no deco modernism or embrace of the future. One could imagine an engineer or management person looking forward to catching up with the latest and greatest in the biz in the middle of World War II.

From my research City Chemical produced "acids, chemicals and malachite green" according to the suppliers section of an old book on printmaking techniques. So my guess is that they were serving the print business of that era.

These days the building is much different: On the ground floor is a small theater which was just opened when we were there — but the rest of the building is condos.

A shoe shine stand at Columbus Park in the heart of Chinatown. The illustration of the show in the sign reminded me a bit of Andy Warhol. I also love the creative use of recycling an old wooden drawer into a show stand.

Shown here is a hallway from the old St. Patrick's Cathedral in Little Italy. Here is some history of the building:

"The corner stone of Old St. Patrick’s - the city’s first Cathedral Church – was laid on June 8,1809. It was dedicated on May 14,1815, and on that day the New York Gazette described the cathedral as “a grand and beautiful church, which may justly be considered one of the greatest ornaments of our city”

Designed by architect Joseph Francois Mangin, St. Patrick’s has great dignity and character in its restrained simplicity. Her sidewalls rise to a height of 75 feet, and the inner vault is 85 feet high. The church is over 120 feet long and 80 feet wide. Near the west wall stands the huge marble altar surrounded by an ornately carved, gold leaf reredos."

Clark has yet to announce if he's running, but he did make it a point to say that he hasn't ruled anything out. He gave a very sharp speech, and the event was well attended. It was enjoyable for me to see so many fellow Clark supporters from the good old days in 2004.
Senator Obama Speaks

michaeljamespinto posted a photo:

Senator Barack Obama speaking to a packed room at the Grand Hyatt New York in the Empire State Ballroom. This was the only photo that I was luncky enough to get in focus as I was a bit far from the stage. The one thing that's funny to note in this photo is how many people are taking snapshots with their cell phones. Here's a bit on the event from NY1:

Obama Raises Cash In Clinton Country

"Democratic Presidential hopeful Senator Barack Obama stumped for dollars Friday in Manhattan. The Illinois Senator held a fundraiser right in the backyard of his rival, Senator Hillary Clinton.

Obama's event was one of the hottest tickets in town. Tickets at $100 each sold out so fast the event was moved to the Grand Hyatt Hotel from a smaller venue. "It underscores the essence of this campaign and that is this: this campaign is not about me,” said Obama. “It's about you."

And while Obama did not mention Senator Hillary Clinton, his wife took a shot not just at her campaign slogan but the perception of Clinton as a poll-driven, manufactured politician.

"I know that Barack is in this not just to win,” said Michelle Obama. “This race is not about winning because winning is not enough nowadays. Winning without dignity, without honor, winning without authenticity and truth, is not winning"."

...to that I'll add I've never seen Michelle Obama speak before, but the audience was pretty blown away by her energy and what she had to say.
Senator Obama Speaks
