Ski Jumps at Lake Placid

Yeah, I was standing at the top of the jump on the right for the photo three images back in my stream. I don't know how these jumpers do it. Dad and I talked with two of them while we visited here. I highly recommend you go here if you get to Lake Placid. Dad and I had a great day here.

Lake Placid Olympic Park

1997. I am standing at the top of the Nordic ski jump, looking out over part of the Olympic Park. The 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics were held in Lake Placid, New York. The U.S. winter athletes train here. The town of Lake Placid is quite different from other Adirondack towns, resembling a small European village. There are many interesting shops and restaurants. And, Lake Placid is only 90 miles south of Montreal. Oddly enough, The town of Lake Placid is on Mirror Lake. Kate Smith used to have a summer home on the lake. Lake Placid is within the Adirondack Park just as my old house in Benson is, but it is 120 miles from Benson and is a long 3 and a half hour drive through the mountains during good weather. In the winter, it can take over twice that long. In fact, during the 1980 Winter Olympics, many buses of people were delayed on Route 30 not far from Benson and never made it in time for the day's events. So, there were hundreds of people stranded who had tickets to the famous hockey game in which the US beat Russia. What a shame. Anyway, so Montreal is actually closer to Lake Placid than is Benson, NY. Also, near my old house is the beginning of the Northville-Lake Placid trail which is the longest hiking trail in the Adirondack Park, 119 miles. It should be called the Benson-Lake Placid Trail. Aside from crossing Route 8, this trail is mostly wilderness the entire length. I always wanted to hike the trail, but did not feel it was wise to do so alone and figured it would take me a week to do it. Mid September would be a good time to hike it as the weather usually is still warm and there are no insects. However, it would not be unusual to get several days of rain. Also, I remember once going up to Benson around Sept. 20th and it got down to 19 degrees the night of my arrival. To top it off, the furnace would not ignite, so I had to sleep in a sleeping bag curled up with my dogs, Mandy and Muffin.
