Casablanca, Morocco, 2011.

After the PJD victory at the parliamentary elections of Nov.25th, the Moroccan political landscape changed. The former alliance composed of the Istiqlal, the USFP (socialist party) and the PPS (post-communist party), named the "Koutla" does not exist anymore.

While the Istiqlal agreed to enter the new governement lead by A. Benkirane, the PJD leader ("islamist party"), the USFP did not. The PPS is still hesitating.

The Istiqlal is Morocco's first political party (independance party) as it was created in 1943 to claim independance. The USFP is the heir of Mehdi Ben Barka's UNFP that splited from Istiqlal in the late 1950's. The PPS is a minor party that was created on the ashes of the former Communist Party, forbidden during colonial rule and then Hassan II's era.

Casablanca, Morocco, 2011.

After the PJD victory at the parliamentary elections of Nov.25th, the Moroccan political landscape changed. The former alliance composed of the Istiqlal, the USFP (socialist party) and the PPS (post-communist party), named the "Koutla" doesn't exist anymore.

The PPS eventually decided to join the PJD government, what is rather surprising for a left wing party, taking part in an alliance with Mr. Benkirane's party, as the PJD leader was rather instrumental while young, in relaying Hassan II's struggle against the Left during the "années de plomb" through the Chabiba Islamiya, an Islamist Organization he then left.

Casablanca, Morocco, 2011.

The PJD (Justice and Development Party) won after friday's general elections in Morocco 107 seats out of 395 in Parliament. The PJD is said to be an "islamist" party by western media, but is more a conservative party inspired by religious thesis, than an "islamist" political movement. After obtaining the majority of seats, it has now to deal with other parties and compose a new government, that it should lead, after King Mohamed VI will name the new Prime Minister.
