Colonel James Walker's home

This photo is from Inglewood bird sanctuary here in Calgary, portraying Colonel Walker's home.

In 1883, Colonel James Walker settled this land which is now the sanctuary. In 1910 the current brick house, named Inglewood, was built.

In 1929, Colonel Walker's son Selby, applied to the Federal government to have 59 acres on the west side of the Bow River be designated as a Federal Migratory Bird Sanctuary. His request was granted and the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary was born. In 1970 the City of Calgary purchased the property and has been managing it as a natural area ever since. The Colonel Walker House is currently both a private residence and office space for Sanctuary volunteers.

The Horseshoe Bend Overlook is located just a few miles south of Page, Arizona, very close to the border with Utah. It's a spectacular place, which can be reached after a short hike of 3/4 of a mile from US 89 to the rim of the bend. The wide, easy-to-follow trail leads up a low, sandy hill. It's not a long hike, but walking up loose sand can be very tiresome, and if it's a warm day (which it was in our case), one should carry enough water.

As soon as we got to the overlook... we were greeted with colors: emerald-green river, orange cliffs and blue sky, not to mention the gorgeous colors of wildflowers along the trail. While peeking over the edge of the cliff, we saw the Colorado itself 1,100 feet down below, shimmering in the sunlight with its wonderful emerald-green color. The River makes a gigantic bend below the overlook, going first to the east, then back to the west, thus the name Horseshoe Bend.

For Moshe and myself, it wasn't easy to peek over the edge. Both of us suffer from fear of heights, and get shaky knees while standing up looking to the abyss below. Joe had the time of his life taking photos, while I was imploring him to walk few steps back. At one point Moshe was willing to get close to the edge, only if Joe holds him from the back, and that's how he took photos of the river below.

This series is from our trip to the USA on May 2005 - 12 photos from Bryce Canyon, which were taken on May 15/16, 2005.

We were lucky to have nice weather on both days. One thing we didn't do was hiking down the canyon. All viewing and shooting were done from the canyon rim.

On the first day we drove through Bryce from south up north, and we stopped at most of the view points to enjoy the sights and take photos. The second day found us at Inspiration point at sunrise, and that was a real treat... the colors of the hoodoos were just magnificent! All in all, to really see Bryce, one needs more time in order to be in the right place at the right time of day.

More mood here!

Well... How was your Christmas? *s*. I hope it was the one you wished for. Ours was quiet, and very yummy!

I just found this photo from 7 years ago, worked on it a bit and liked the outcome. It is amazing to find old photos, taken as JPGs by our old Olympus C 5050 Z, and be able to PP it with nowadays tools (though I needed a minimum one here), and get something nice *s*.

It's always interesting to visit a place in a different time of the year, and find out how the weather changes the makeup of the landscape. Since we were in this particular spot in November 2008, we wanted to go back and find out how it looked with a green "shirt". As you can see, both times of the year have their unique charm on the landscape.
