While they tend to follow each other and baa a lot, the widely held belief that sheep are empty headed is unjustified. According to scientists, they can differentiate the faces of sheep they have seen before from those they have not, as well as being able to recognise a familiar human face. They are also able to remember up to 50 sheep faces that have been absent from the flock for up to two years. The value of being able to do this is likely to be the same for sheep as it is for humans - to remember and respond appropriately to long-term social relationships.
