Iron Railings

While touring the house, the Mayor told us a story about the previous owners:

A couple who came to own the Melson house ended up getting a divorce. In the settlement, the (ex) wife got to keep the Prairie School style home. Purportedly to anger her ex-husband, she painted all of the wrought iron railings and the tall concrete pillars flanking the garage doors. She painted them a bright yet creamy pink, a decidedly feminine color especially on such a boldly designed home.

While all of the paint from the concrete has been removed, some still remains on the iron railings around the house.

Possibly the most beautiful garage doors I have seen. The garage is a drive-thru style with a pair of matching double-doors on the opposite side.

The Stockman House is based on Wright's design for a "fireproof" home featured in the Ladies Home Journal, which advertised that such a home could be built for $5,000.

The Old Hotel

After going through successive remodels that stripped away most of the original building interior and exterior, the Prairie Inn Hotel is beginning a major renovation project. The goal is to restore the former bank and hotel to its original design. It will once again become a hotel, but now with a banquet hall instead of a bank.
