The bulk of Liathach at 1053 metres towers above you in the Beinn Eighe mountain range. Not a week for many reflections as most of the lochs, streams and even rivers were frozen solid !

Hubberholme In Upper Wharfedale

Hubberholme is an old village in Upper Wharfedale in the Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire, England, at the point where Langstrothdale meets Wharfedale. It is quite secluded and the nearest village is Buckden.

The old Norman church is the resting place of the ashes of the writer and playwright J.B. Priestley. The old inn, The George, is opposite the Church. This is notable for the lit candle that sits on the bar to indicate the pub is open and serving. The tradition dates from distinctive auctions for agricultural land or grazing that were held in The George. The last bid to be received before the candle extinguished was the winner.

Hubberholme is the midpoint of a very popular walk from Buckden, via Hubberholme to Cray (lunch at the White Lion) and along the lower slopes of Buckden Pike back to Buckden - about 6 miles. Hubberholme also lies on the Dales Way in between Buckden and Yockenthwaite.

Boredale Hause is a typical glacial coomb lying at the head of Boredale and forms a pass between Place Fell and Angletarn Pikes, linking Boredale with Patterdale. Hause originates from the Vikings and means pass in Cumbria. Boredale lies to the south of Ullswater, Boredale Beck emptying into the lake at Sandwick.

The Nab - Martindale

The upper part of Martindale around The Nab is a deer reserve which is not open to the public and contains no rights of way. The reserve is home to the oldest native red deer herd in England. Hill walkers are requested by the Dalemain Estate, which owns the reserve, to keep to preferred routes which avoid the herds when climbing The Nab, to which there is now open access under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000.

At the foot of The Nab is “The Bungalow”, this is a former shooting lodge which was constructed in 1910 by Hugh Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale for a deer shooting visit by the German Emperor Wilhelm II in 1910.

Helm Crag

Helm Crag is a fell in the English Lake District situated in the Central Fells to the north of Grasmere. Despite its low height it sits prominently at the end of a ridge, easily seen from the village. This, combined with the distinctive summit rocks which provide the alternative name ‘The Lion and the Lamb’, makes it one of the most recognised hills in the District.

Alfred Wainwright wrote of Helm Crag that “The virtues of Helm Crag have not been lauded enough. It gives an exhilarating little climb, a brief essay in real mountaineering, and, in a region where all is beautiful, it makes a notable contribution to the natural charms and attractions of Grasmere.”

Martindale, in the lake district (England), runs for approximately nine km in a north to south direction, it is a remote and thinly populated valley which has a permanent population of only about 50 residents. The foot of the valley is located at the small hamlet of Sandwick on the western shore of Ullswater, while its head is situated on the slopes of Rampsgill Head where the headwaters of Howegrain Beck rise at a height of around 700 metres above sea level. The upper part of the valley is divided into two branches by the fell of The Nab, these two sub valleys named Bannerdale and Rampsgill contain the streams of Bannerdale Beck and Rampsgill Beck which meet at a point midway down Martindale to form Howegrain Beck which then becomes the main watercourse for the lower part of Martindale and enters Ullswater at Sandwick. Just before reaching Sandwick, Martindale is joined by the side valley of Boredale, which enters from the south.

MALHAM-MOOR, a township in that part of the parish of KIRKBY in MALHAM-DALE which is in the western division of the wapentake of STAINCLIFFE and EWCROSS, West riding of the county of YORK, 5.5 miles (N.E.) from Settle, containing 88 inhabitants ...Samuel Lewis "Topographical Dictionary of England" 1831.

Beamsley Beacon cairn forms an impressive mound, twelve metres in diameter and over two metres high, set at the beginning of a long broad ridge which heads towards the north-east. It commands panoramic views in practically every direction, even as far as Pendle Hill in Lancashire, whose distinctive long sloping profile dominates the south-western horizon.

From the size, shape and position of Beamsley Beacon cairn it is thought to date from the 2nd millennium BC and to have been constructed during the Bronze Age as a funerary structure. It may contain later burials, in common with other cairns of this date in the area.
