Manhattan Morning

A panorama of Lower Manhattan Island as seen from Fulton Ferry Landing at Brooklyn Bridge Park just before sunrise.

It was a cold, cold morning--but totally worth getting up and out of my warm, hotel bed for! As it turns out, this was the only clear-skied morning of my trip. One day I'll have to return to this spot once the Freedom Tower is completed and the construction scaffolding is off of the Brooklyn Bridge as well.

Question: How do you make 50 people disappear?
Answer: Have your camera create a "time portal."

Using a long shutter speed, four dozen or so people become ghosts from an ethereal world on this carnival swing carousel. Maybe the camera captured what really goes on... it becomes a portal transporting them to another time or dimension. Afterall, they say the camera never lies!

Taken at the Punahou School Carnival held every February. Monies made from the event goes towards scholarships for families needing financial aid to send their kids to this school. Barack Obama was himself a recipient of this scholarship in the decade of the '70s until his graduation in '79.

A City Awakens…

My intent was to capture the colors of the early morning sky reflecting in the upper portion of the Chrysler Building. However, nature chose not to cooperate as it was totally overcast that morning. Only one portion of the sky had any color, and that was looking north up Lexington Avenue. It was a small patch of color at the end of the corridor, so I had to zoom aaaaaall the way in to fill the frame!

I was able to get a few nice, ultra-wide angle shots of the building which I think will make for a nice black and white later. But this random shot of the street happened to be my favorite of the morning!

I had gone to Brooklyn Bridge Park under the Brooklyn Bridge for sunrise photos, mainly a panorama of Lower Manhattan. That will come next. However, I spotted this famous lady far, far away. Luckily, I had a long zoom lens (200mm with a 2x extender for 400mm). I had actually taken this photo as an aside since it wasn't my main subject. My plan was to go to Battery Park for sunrise photos of the statue on another day with more close ups. However, future mornings (and days in general) didn't cooperate as it was either cloudy, or worse, foggy. The pics I did get from Battery Park were so foggy, you could barely make out any detail. So, this one had to suffice!

At any rate, if you have a long zoom lens such as a 70-200mm lens, an extender is a great accessory for it!

After 2500 photos (up to this point) in 4 days in New York City, and after walking several miles with several pounds of gear, I was exhausted, (to put it mildly). Having just had dinner with my cousin on our last night there around 11:30pm, we were headed back to the hotel. It was very cold and very foggy out and I was really looking forward to four or five hours of sleep in a warm, comfy bed before cabbing it to the airport at 6am. I glanced down 42nd Street from Times Square just to get one last glimpse from far away of my all-time favorite NYC building...

The Chrysler Building!

The night, the lights, the fog... it was just too magical to pass up--even after having shot it on two separate occasions earlier in the trip. Right then I knew, I would get very little sleep. So, back to the room to get my gear and off into the night I went...

I took around 300 photos between 12:30-2:30am. This particular one was right across the street (on 42nd) from Grand Central Station. Aside from a slight saturation bump and tone level adjustments, this is pretty much what it looked like S.O.O.C. (straight out of camera).

To me, I could just imagine Batman perched atop the building in the lower-right of the frame overlooking the city... hence naming the photo --GOTHAM--

Another photo from my southwest Oklahoma series near my home town of Hobart. This is a field of canola northeast of town just past the Gotebo "Y," (for those of you who know where that is, LOL!)

This was taken near sunset, but facing the opposite direction. I wanted to show just how expansive this field was... it reminded me of being in the ocean.

Here is where your bread comes from! An Oklahoma wheat field is seen here near sunset with an irrigation system featured.

I'm on a trip to the homeland for a family get-together. Saw this on the road between the homes my brother's and sister's house.

Went to a friend's family home, (The Liljestrand House which is on the National Registry of Historic Places) to enjoy a wonderful, Sunday afternoon Hawaiian music concert. This is Haunani Apoliona. Aside from being a mean slack-key guitar player and singer whom I've watched perform over the last 15 years or so, is also a native Hawaiian activist.

She is also a member of the group Olomana who was performing here.

This is the invite highlighting my work at the Ho'omaluhia Botanical Gardens Gallery showing. Our soft opening will be on Sunday, November 6 from 3-5pm. The show will last for the month of November. Gallery hours are from 9am-4pm daily.

The theme of my pieces is "Kai." It is Hawaiian for "ocean" and is a collection of ocean photographs in Hawaii and the Philippines.

I will be showing with other artists highlighted on the other gallery invite.

For all of my Hawaii FLickr friends, I hope you all can make it a some point this month. I think you all will be delighted with all of the pieces shown by all of the artists. The Botanical Gardens itself is a wonderful place to spend your day. It is nestled right at the foot of the Ko'olaus on the Windward side. If it has been raining, the waterfalls will be numerous and breath-taking!

My brother and his wife came to visit for a week. A few nights ago we did a dinner cruise aboard the "Star of Honolulu" ship. It left Honolulu Harbor for a 2 hour cruise to Diamond Head and back!

You can see, I wasn't the only one shooting...

A common theme I noticed throughout the island of Siquijor, was fishermen on outrigger canoes. From sunup to sundown, they were a constant sight all around... I can only imagine the peace of mind that must come from being out there, in very tranquil waters, watching the sky and sea turn into a painting!

This was taken in the evening from inside the karaoke hut looking out to sea. It was my last shot of the day!

* All shots I took on Siquijor during this trip were without my tripod, as I decided to embrace the spirit of a photo-journalist. So, I pushed the ISO quite a bit. On the previous two shots, it may be hard to tell since they were so wide-angled and on my 5D, but on this one which was zoomed in, I had to go up to 1600 on my Rebel. So it is a little grainy.

A mangrove tree greets the sunrise and fisherman during low tide on the eastern side of the mystical island of Siquijor in the Philippines.

Having arrived at 11am the previous day, this was my only chance for sunrise photos. During our circumnavigation of the island by jeepney the day before, we happened upon this scenic spot about 15-20 minutes before sunset. While the lighting was nice enough, the tide was high, and it just didn't offer that dynamic vernacular. However, knowing we were on the east side, we decided to make it out here the next morning to catch the sunrise...

After taking sunset photos at the karaoke hut, we completed our trip back in the town of Siquijor. There we negotiated a 3:45 am pickup by a motorcycle cab (yes, this kind), and the following morning the three of us and our driver made our way back out here (about an hour trip each way, and very uncomfortable)... to the beach on the boulevard of the Siquijodnon town of Enrique Villanueva, where we took about an hour-and-a-half worth of shots...

...this was one of the very last ones. We had all but packed up our gear when we saw the boat sailing by. Well, you can't let that opportunity pass you by!

Honolulu Twisters!

Taken from my living room through the window.

The twin tornado/waterspouts just a few hundred yards off of the shore near downtown Honolulu/Waikiki. Although they are rare, we do get the occasional funnel cloud. But, in my 22 years here, I have never seen one (or two for that matter) as spectacular as this. Eventually, they merged into a single, thicker one... but not before dancing and spinning around each other in what appeared to be beautiful, natural choreography!

Also of note, NO damage or injuries occured at all from this, so feel free to marvel at the power of mother nature.

...a KARAOKE BAR! (no kidding, LOL)!

Just back from 11 days in the Philippines. For those of you who've known me for a while know I go every two years or so to train architecture college professors as well as a company work team to use an architectural software I use/sell/tutor. At any rate, at the end of my trip there, I took an overnight excursion to the "mystical" island of Siquijor, (pronounced seekeehor), and met up with another photographer friend I've known for five years or so from Dumaguete (on the island of Negros)--Hersley Casero. In less than a 24-hour period I took around 1700 shots! I'd say I've made up for my lack of travel/landscape photo activity for 2011!

More photos and stories to come of this wonderful jewel of an island.

...and now for some mood music. As I was taking this very shot, it "wasn't" a soothing, tropical song of some sort being sung inside and heard loudly outside, but rather a rockin' version of Kelly Clarkson's "Breakaway," (hence the inclusion of the song name in the title of this photo!) ;^D

Would have been nice to stay and have a beer after a looooooong day, and even to "sing" a song... but it was getting late, and we had a very, very early morning excursion planned. More on that later.

This was taken the Saturday evening before Easter Sunday. Maybe that's why the crowd is light.

I also love that everyone I showed this to back in Dumaguete, including my photo companions while still here, laughed and said, "That's so pinoy!" (hahaha)

Hi everyone! Yup, been in a Flickr-coma lately... Just wanted to stop by and wish all of you a
Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerry Christmas!

I haven't taken an s.p. in awhile, so I used this one from May from atop one of my favorite places in Hawaii: Koko Crater. I went up to catch the moonset early in the morning. As you can see, I perspired a bit, LOL! Carrying lotsa camera gear/tripod up 1400 feet will do that to you, haha! But hey, you gotta take me as you get me! ;^D

I hope to end the year with some posts. I've done a lot of family portraits for people this season, so have been busy with that, and will post some of them soon!

...I'm trying not to be a one trick pony, but I can't help myself... LOL!

This was taken on the autumnal equinox. One of the rare times it syncs up with a full moon. It happens once every twenty years or so and is called a "Super Harvest Moon." More generally though, when it occurs anytime "around" the equinox, it is called a "Harvest Moon."

While a lot of teens spend their evenings at home playing video games, veggin' out in front of the TV or surfing the internet, these guys are doing the old fashion kind of surfing... WAVES!!!
