Halcyon smyrnensis

Shot this at Kukulegama in Sri Lanka. A very common bird there but numbers seem to be dwindling recently.

This guy was shot at Lake Nakuru Lodge in Kenya. Those feathers shine beautifully when the sun hits at the right angle :D

We had heard of this cafe/truck stop in Stokenchurch where these birds come to feed on the food put out by the cafe. Unfortunately, it was closed on the day we went (Sunday) so no feeding shots - but we did see a few flying overhead.

Have wanted to get a shot of a Robin for a long time. This is not the ideal composition or background, made even worse by the fact that the little guy hopped quite close to me and got on to the perfect branch and pose, when I had the camera on timer and lost the shot! :(

But hey .. I will take what I can get!

We found this little beauty on our way out of Masai Mara. She seemed curious about us and posed quite prettily till we got some shots.

It was a pretty bright day so I did an HDR from a single raw file.

No.... I am not insulting Korey - that's what this bird is actually called. It's a very interesting bird that we came across in Masai Mara, Kenya. It's one of the heaviest flying birds in the world and can grow up to 3 feet and weigh about 12 - 15 Kgs. They have a very interesting mating display which involves inflating throat sacs or elevating their elaborate feathered crests (a shot of this in comments).

This was shot at Masai Mara, Kenya. We stayed at a place called Nyumbu Camp which had a tree full of nests built by these birds. Most of the nests had nestlings (baby birds) in them and the adults were busy feeding them. One of the nestlings fell out and we did a rescue mission to restore it back in the nest.

A bit confused about the identification of this bird - it looks very much like a Northern Masked Weaver but they are supposed to be found only near Lake Baringo whereas this was shot at Masai Mara.

Freeze the flutter

This is the Long Tailed Widow Bird - a beautiful bird with an even more beautiful courtship dance. It was fantastic to watch! Absolute nightmare to shoot in flight because he keeps fluttering about in every direction.

The first time we saw it, we thought it was a garbage bag flying in the wind! We spent almost an hour watching him dance trying to impress a mate - who was not interested at all :( Compared to body size, he has one of the longest tails of any bird. More info

Monday was... interesting! Won the monthly company poker game..... good! Went out celebrating.... bad, very bad! I was actually thinking of posting a blank image to represent how I felt that night (and the reason why I couldn't take my daily shot). So enough said.

Instead I dug in to the archives and realised that I still have not processed shots from the trip to Sri Lanka last year. This guy was shot at Uda Walawe national park.

One of the regrets in living in a 2nd floor flat is that we don't have a garden to setup bird feeders. We hang this one outside our window and it gets quite busy especially during the winter months. However, these birds are quite skittish and it becomes difficult to get a shot.

I set the camera on a tripod and set up a flash bounced off a silver reflector to give some fill light. I put on my wireless shutter release and then sat back watching tv. Every time the guy came to feed, I pressed the remote to take some shots. I should have cleaned the window a bit more though
