Especially the soft-shell clams ('strandgapers' in Dutch)can become very big. We often came across specimens that were over 15cms wide!

These flats were not made of mud, but of sand. Believe me if I say it walked like you're in heaven (compared to the mud just minutes before)!

Some of these were easy to cross, not being very deep. Others had very strong currents, or were simply too deep.

This guy had a typical Groningen accent. He showed us around, using a long pole to measure depts, carrying a first aid kit, GPS and marine radio equipment to be used in case of emergency. He also learned us a lot about marine life in the Wadden Sea, and recommended a mainland-island hike which is now definitely on my to-do list for the (near) future.

These shells are edible, and taste great! I ate them raw (no harm in that!), which made them taste a bit like both muscles and oysters.

Several of these marked a trench that was permanently flooded (and thus permitting ships to cross the Wadden Sea). Here it was low tide.
