As I was driving to work over the Berkeley hills the other morning, this thick layer of fog was blanketing the entire bay area. All you could see was this immaculate and fluffy white sheet except for the two pillars of the Golden Gate bridge that were barely peeking through. I used the maximum zoom I had with me (200 mm) to get as close as possible to the pillars, however, being several miles away I could not get a nice sharpness on them. So I used photoshop to bring out some of the colors and Topaz Adjust to give it a painterly look.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is definitely one of the best on the west coast, and probably in the US too. And the jellyfish exhibition is a must see. There is something beautiful, elegant, and yet alien, about these creatures that it is impossible not to look at them in wonderment.

Guests to the Hearst Castle included many of the who’s who of the early 1920s-1930s. Actors such as Charlie Chaplin, Clark Gable, and politicians such as Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt (before he became US president) frequently visited the Castle. And William Randolph Hearst made sure that they had a good time. This is one of the many rooms that Hearst made available to the guests.

The observatory on top of Mt. Diablo (3,900 ft/1,300 m), the tallest mountain in the San Francisco East Bay Area and one of the main cycling challenges around here. Eleven miles of climbing with an average 7% grade, peaking at 18% during the last 300 yards to the top. We are lucky to live just a few miles from the slopes of this beautiful mountain and once in a while we take our bikes and go up the mountain. The best part is that once you had enough, you just turn the bike around and enjoy the downhill...

Bridge Vittorio Emanuele II. Dedicated to the first king of Italy is one of the newest bridges in Rome (only 100 years old!). It was inaugurated in 1911 to celebrate 50 years of the Kingdom of Italy.

Holiday shoppers at the Galleria Umberto I in Naples. Built at the end of the 19th century and modeled on the Galleria Vittorio Emanule II in Milan, is one of the main shopping centers in Naples. The Galleria was named for Umberto I, King of Italy at the time of construction.

Green hills of California

This is definitely the best time of the year for the hills around the San Francisco Bay Area. After the January/February rains, they turn this luscious green that just before sunset becomes alight with this marvelous glow. In a couple of months they will turn “golden”, which is a local euphemism for sun burnt. Taken along the backroads between San Ramon and Livermore.

My sister visited me with her husband (SMEP1 on Flickr) and daughter and we took the chance to drive south and visit the Hearst Castle in San Simeon (almost half of the way between San Francisco and Los Angeles). Perched on top of the 600-foot hills right by the coast, the Castle was designed by architect Julia Morgan for the newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. Built between the two World Wars, it is now a California State Park. The Neptune pool, which was modified and rebuilt three times before Hearst was happy with it, is not even the more lavish of the pools at the Castle.

Solvang is a small town ~100 miles north of Los Angeles that is a little piece of Denmark in south California (although some people think it is Dutch, probably because of the several windmills). We went there over the last weekend in March for a 3-day bike ride. Gorgeous weather, great rides, nice group of fellow bikers, and good food. A perfect weekend, you might say.
