Okay, back to the wild, white wading birds. Among my favorite egrets, it seems the snowies always steal the show. This one was displaying to attract the attention of a prospective mate. The background's a little busy, but sometimes you just have to take what you can get.

I spent a couple of days at the Alligator Farm in St. Augustine, Florida, this weekend. If you happen to be in the vicinity in the next two or three weeks and you want to have some great opportunities to photograph wood storks, great white egrets, snowy egrets, roseate spoonbills and other wading birds in various stages of breeding plumage, nest building, chick raising, etc., there is no better place than the Alligator Farm. This was my third trip down there for breeding season and the place is literally jam-packed with wild wading birds that come into the "lagoon" to nest amid the alligators. (Predators such as raccoons can't get to the nests because of the alligators below, although a few careless birds have lost tail feathers and more to a sneaky alligator.) Some birds are so close you can actually reach out and touch their nests (but don't!). The facility is very photographer friendly -- if you buy a photo pass you can get in at 8:00 a.m. (it doesn't open to the public until 9:00) and you can also stay later in the afternoon than the general public. If you are willing to "tip" the keeper $5, he or she will normally let you stay until almost dark. Despite strong storms rolling through this weekend, there were approximately 40 photographers waiting to get in at 8:00 on Sunday morning, including some who were participating in workshops. Be prepared for some serious "lens envy" because some of these folks come with their big guns, but you really don't need long lenses to get great photos here. Another "snowy" shot from Key Largo, this taken just before the sun dropped below the horizon. More intricate details if you view large. (Speaking of snowy, there's lots of snow and ice on the ground in Atlanta this morning, with temps in the teens. We are not amused.) Hope everyone has a great weekend!

After spending Christmas in New York, we spent a few days before New Years in Key Largo, Florida. Left most of the photo gear at home again -- just took the 18-200 travel lens. I'm not a "hand holder" when it comes to photography, so I was pretty pleased that some of the bird shots I took on this trip actually came out halfway sharp.

Okay, so the Flickr gods were not completely helpful in converting this one and it is very noisy anyway because it is a pretty significant crop, but you gotta admit this reddish egret is the very picture of intensity. When they are on a hunting mission, they are fiercely determined to succeed.

Great white egret in breeding colors -- another from the bird archives. I'm not sure why, but I've always liked the perspective in this image, and the fact that it's not a straight-on profile. It gives the sense of being just off the egret's right shoulder, looking into the distance with him, not at him.

Flickr was such a disaster yesterday that I just gave up. Will catch up today if the Magic Donkey is back on his feet.

On a recent trip to Sanibel Island I just plopped myself down on the beach late one afternoon under my unextended tripod and shot whatever shorebirds came by -- simple pleasures. The lead singer looks even nicer if you view large.
