St Abbs Causeway

Not had much in the way of sunsets recently but had some better days.

One of my fav spots of the old causeway at St Abbs. Ten stop B&W filter than came into its own as the spray on this day was awful and it was easy to give a quick wipe and carry on.

The dark clouds were heading my way and shortly after it rained but got some good light just before.

First proper outing with the Canon 6D and very happy with the usability. Still need to sort out my lenses before making a final judgement. The Canon app is just great too with live view shooting and image download to phone even from a RAW (processed in camera) which can then be uploaded or e-mailed instantly.

Was freezing cold with snow showers and a strong wind down at Yellowcraigs Beach with the sun lighting up the snow clouds. Totally missed a cracking sunset as went to Hailes Castle and was in too much of a dip to get the dramatic sunset.

Taken with the B&W ten stop at a high iso to capture the water movement and just one expsoure with no grads so foreground has been lightened by bringing out the shadows in the RAW conversion.

Noticed the iso performance appears to be better on the Canon than the D600 especially beyond iso 1600.

St Mary's Dusk

Took a bit of a road trip into Northumberland over Xmas hols and finished up at St Mary's Lighthouse.

Conditions weren't very inspiring, but glad I have been here and worked the place out for one day when the conditions were better. I liked the comp in this shot, but just wished I had better light and colour. The foreground was not lit at all due the cliffs above and glad I managed to produce a shot.

Had banding issues with this shot, in the skies, but hopefully managed to remove through a variety of processes and not really sure what worked or didn't. So I appreciated everyones help in this problem :)

Bumped into another Flickr contact Graeme Campbell www.flickr.com/photos/gcfotographos/ so it was good to meet up. I seem to bump into other contacts in across Scotland and Northumberland on a random but regular basis.

Jurassic Shelter

Had a couple of days for shooting over the festive break, but the weather hasn't been playing ball.

This was taken on Wednesday when we had 60 mile an hour winds and I managed to find a spot that was sheltered amongst these huge rocks at Eyemouth.

Two exposures blended as the foreground was really dark and the skies pretty bright.

The rocks on the horizon are about 20 ft high to give you a sense of scale.

Last post of the year so Happy New Year when it comes to all my contacts and look forward to being inspired next year by your shots.

Seafield Rocks

Taken a while back when across in Fife and had an whole afternoon to go back to some old haunts.

This is Seafield where there are some old WW2 ruins that are slowly decaying and falling into the sea.

My tripod did move a bit in the wet sand so not as sharp as it should be but partially rescued thanks to a suggestion from Raymond Larosse www.flickr.com/photos/lenscrack/ on using a high pass filter in Photoshop and I liked the results. Maybe slightly overdone to compensate the softness though..

Normally would of shot later here but had to be over the other side of the Forth soon after, but the clouds made a nice effect.

Not had much joy recently with the weather.

Popped out on Sat eve but was chasing the dry spots and ended up at Port Seton, but started raining when the skies were at their best, so missed a good opp. Had to crank up the iso and a double exposure as wasn't using a Grad due to the immenient rain. 500 iso for the foreground and 320 for the skies.

Only got a few shots before it was all over, so never got a great comp as the best light was the the left of the rocks.

Skateraw Ledge

Mono conversion off the point at Skateraw near Torness.

Had an hour free in the afternoon so headed down the coast for a bit of R&R.

I liked the colour version but couldn't get it to look 100% natural

A desaturated colour version of a shot from Dunbar.

Think this works better than the mono as there isn't enough contrast to get a good B&W without loosing detail in the rock

Taken on the same day as my previous shot and desaturated the original.

Its called between posts as there are two posts either side of the rock if you look closely enough..

Another grey weekend on the East coast of Scotland so headed down the beach for some LE work.

So glad for the invention of the ten stop as it allows good results on dull days.

Temp on Friday was 25C and then at the w/e was only 10C...

Sadly I forgot my timer so couldn't do any longer shots than 30 seconds but there was enough swell to make things interesting.

Will revisit this area just as the tide comes up as some great rocks with strange rope like textures on them.

Weather has been too iffy to bother driving down to the coast this week, but reckon there might have been some good opportunities between the showers. Miss being closer to the coast where you can make a last minute decision to go down

Taken at St Abbs a few weeks back when we had some better weather. Very big swell running and the rocks in the centre are about 20 feet so gives one an idea of the waves.

No long exposure here and was quite lucky to capture the droplets of water.

Found a great spot near Berwick Upon Tweed when the tide was out.

Some amazing rock structures with massive 6 feet ledges jutting out at 45 degrees towards the left of the shot. Not recommended for when the tide is coming as would get cut off very easily as big channels between the lines of rock.

Weather has been really poor on the East coast of Scotland all week and looking like even colder at the weekend

Epic Eyemouth

Some great rocks at Eyemouth and had a scary time trying to get some shots as the waves were huge.

Was wanting shorter exposures to capture the waves, but it was getting that dark that this was not possible. So had to go for longer exposures to try and prevent the ghosting effect.

These rocks look small, but the ledge is about 10ft up and getting water onto it. The rock to the left is about 15ft high and waves were breaking over it.. hence the use of a longer lens as with the wide angle I would of probably been in the sea..

One taken just before Christmas down at my favourite haunt on the West Coast.

Liked that I managed to fit in the castle as well. It was very windy and rain was spitting as this massive cloud moved in.

Taken with the B&W ten stop and two exposures blended as didn't use a grad due to the spray and wind.

Got a colour version too that I am undecided about

Thanks for all the help on banding. I have several things to try but I don't think there is a definitive solution as each photo requires individual attention.

This was about the best colour in the sky I managed over the Xmas hols with many trips out and since then the East Coast has been going off now that back at work.

Was just about to head out to try and take some night sky shots but it clouded over. Clyde Muirshiel Park is meant to be a good spot with low light pollution so hoping to try soon

During the Christmas hols I had about eight outings and drove some 300 miles to various locations within East Coast Scotland and Northumberland during this period and this was the final eve when finally I got pleasing conditions with some nice colour,movement and a decent location. Most other attempts had either no cloud or loads of wind/ rain.

This was taken on the eve of the last stormy conditions we had in Scotland where it was very windy, but a small secluded bay provided shelter from the wind.

Never shot this bay at higher tide, but the rocks are very special and will be back here again as this is at lowish tide.

Didn't go for long exposures (30 secs plus) as there was some nice movement for a change.

About one hour before sunset looking towards Isle of Arran from the bay at Troon.

Taken with the B&W ten stop with two exposures as the skies above were very bright.

You can just make out Ailsa Craig on the far left

Weather has been a bit rubbish again and this was my attempt in bring in some colour to this shot.

Out with Graham Stirling and bumped into RF- Edin www.flickr.com/photos/40715570@N06/5985374757/in/photostream. We all spend ages trying to find a decent location as lots of seaweed and little colour in the skies.

Gutted as got offered a job with a bank and then failed the credit check so no job..I wouldn't have even been dealing with money.

We are the ones bailing them out and they are the main reason for the financial crisis.

Rant over.

Some nice pastel colours were coming out. Weather has finally improved for the better.
