Morning After the Storm

Please press "L" to view this on black.

It was autumn, and two of my friends and I were on a road trip to capture some fall colors when an unexpected snow storm hit us while we were on one of the highest peaks in the Eastern Sierra. Subsequently, we'd lost our trail on the way back due to the fresh snow covering. Without a clear path, navigating our way down the mountain in the dark became quite a challenge. Looking back, I think it could have been dangerous. But, that's a different story for another day. After we got back to our car safely, we found ourselves stranded on Tioga Pass as the roads were closed on both sides due to snow. Exhausted, tired and with no other options, we slept in the car for the night.

I woke up early the next morning and found ourselves in winter paradise. Meadows, trees, rocks were all covered with fresh snow. Although it was completely overcast and the ground was pretty icy, we decided to walk around and look for photo opportunities while we waited for the roads to reopen. As the fog/clouds continued to clear, this mountain peak slowly revealed itself. To my delight, I immediately walked to the edge of the lake and scouted for my shot. I like how the rocks in the shallow water provided a nice foreground that transitions to the mirror reflection of the mountain here. Although not the fall color shot that we'd planned for, this turned out to be quite a bonus for us on this trip nonetheless. Not to mention the adventures that went along with it!
I have an exhausting but very fun photo trip to the Eastern Sierra with Yan and a pro landscape photographer, Jon Klein recently.

It was a great day in the Eastern Sierra's high country. An early season snow storm has just passed. The morning breeze was crisp, and the sky was all dramatic! Here's a picture that I have wanted to capture for sometime. I was actually here last year but the condition was not right. This time, I got some nice pink-colored sky to compliment the scene. As I waited for the condition to peak, many photographers started to line up around the lake. Clouds were moving fast, as wind also started to pick up. Soon after, the sky started turning red, and pink. Colors were in all directions! It was hard to contain my excitement. As soon as the first light hit the summit, it was showtime!

I like how the foreground rocks lined up with the reflected light from the alpenglow which then leads to the mountains. The submerged rocks along the shore also added some interest to the overall scene.

Thanks to Fog Ninja, Alan Chan for his fog alert. Without it, I would not have been on this hill that morning and got this shot.

This is a 3:1 panoramic. The usual and safe composition. Hope I will get to see more low fog days like this, and try some other composition next time.

It was a fun morning shooting with Alan Chan, Yan, and Aaron M. On the way back to the car, we also met Della Huff, and Daniel Pivnick. It was nice meeting you both, and I enjoyed viewing your take from that morning.
It was a real treat to see this in person and being there was very rewarding. I enjoyed shooting the milky way, so I sure hope to do more images like this in the future. Thanks to the great company, Yan and Harravnit. It was a great pleasure shooting with you on this outing.
Armageddon - Alviso Sunset

Sunset during a Monsoon Thunderstorm. San Jose, CA. September 2012.

This year's drought has created this awesome but also eeri looking terrain from a dried lakebed right in the middle of Silicon Valley. I have been waiting to shoot here after I learned about this location a few weeks ago but the weather had been too boring since that time until last Wednesday when a brief thunderstorm passed by. Needless to say, I made sure I have my camera ready.

I arrived right when the sunset was getting good. Not surprising, a few of my flickr contacts are already shooting there - Jave, Aaron, Willie, Lukas and Matt. Having only clear and overcast skies the last few weeks, I was only hoping for a decent sunset "with clouds". But, oh boy! What a dramatic light show we got that night! The sky literary looked as if it was on fire! Right at this time, a small patch of rain cloud went into the middle of the scene and added more drama to it. The highly contrasty red/yellow colored sky combined with the cracked mud terrain reminds me of alien planet landscape they show in Sci-fi movies.

Golden Gate Bridge 75th Anniversary

wilson_ng posted a photo:

Just the past Sunday, many of us were treated to a magnificent fireworks show at Golden Gate Bridge as we celebrated her 75th Birthday! The festivities run for 2 days and ended with this 30 mins fireworks show.

There were quite some planning done to get here to shoot that day. I contacted Aaron M earlier last week to coordinate when and how to get here. Due to many roads closure for the festivities, we were worried about parking situation in the city, so AaronM, Zach and I had decided to come here early. (Thanks AaronM, and Zach for coordinating and for the ride....It was nice shooting with you! Hope we'll get to do it again soon)

There were also some debate on where to shoot. In the end, we chose to be up in the hill on the Marin side due to concerns of possible low fog and wind direction after sunset. The compromised made here was that I had to deal with the hill blocking the lower part of this image...well, we can't have everything...so I am not complaining! hehe!

As we waited, Jave, Alan, Jared, Carl and Toby also arrived. They even brought a grill to the hill and treated us to some awesome grilled hotdogs while we kill time. (Thanks for the hotdogs and it was nice hanging out with you all again!)

Good Morning, San Francisco!

Press 'L' to view this in larger size and in black background.

It's been a while since I last posted a picture on here. I have been monitoring the fog condition at Golden Gate Bridge for quite some time and had gotten skunk a few times. When I saw that the condition might work last Friday, I woke up at 4AM and headed there. As I approached the bridge, I was greeted by thin layer of fog. Knowing that the fog will get thicker in the next 2 hours, I got really pumped! As I drove up the hill, I saw many photographers were already setup and shooting, I quickly parked my car and setup, aimed at the bridge and shot away!

This morning, I also have the pleasure to finally meet Alan Chan and Joe Azure. Previously, Alan was kind enough to text me on couple of occasions to tell me about the fog condition in SF, but we'd never met until this time. It was a nice meeting you guys! Hope to catch up again next time this condition happens! Be sure to check their photo stream if you haven't already.

Have a great week, everyone!

On a recent morning, I woke up at 4:00AM and drove to San Francisco hoping to capture some scenes with the fog. But as I was approaching the city, it became clear that my initial plan won't materialize. Though the sky was still dark, I can see that it was too overcast with no texture. Soon after, one of my contact, Louie Imaging (if you haven't seen his images, be sure to check it out) also texted me and told me that there was no fog!!! John, if you are reading this, many thanks for the calls and text msgs! Ah! Weather forecast has once again played games with me! Since I was already more than half way there, I decided to just proceed but chose a different location which I hoped is more suitable for the weather condition. It's my consolation shot from that morning and I hope it was worthwhile.
Since I was already more than half way there, I decided to just proceed but chose a different location which I hoped is more suitable for the weather condition. It's my consolation shot from that morning and I hope it was worthwhile.
Tufa Formation
I have the opportunity to visit this spot on a weekend trip recently. It was my first time here, and I absolutely fell in love with this place the very moment I saw it. I arrived just on time. Unfortunately, that means I did not have much time to scout around. This place is amazing to look and tour around, but it felt quite overwhelming to shoot. Maybe it was due to the number of people here or the difficulties of finding my way in and around these tufa columns. Being my first time here, I wanted to include the most recognizable tufa formation in my frame, so I ended up choosing this small section of the lake where I can see this popular rock formation and use the partially submerged tufas as my foreground element. The water was a bit choppy that day thus, I could not get that perfect reflection of the tufas that I had hoped for. Well...maybe next time!

Please let me know what you think. Hope everyone is having a great week!
Here's one of the Mossbrae Falls shots from my trip last month. I have heard how nice this waterfall was and had seen many nicer photos of it on flickr, but when I arrived here, I was speechless! This little secluded section of the Sacramento River is absolutely breathtaking to say the least. I took many shots at this location and may post one or two more later.

Thanks for your support and visits. I originally processed this with much brighter tone, but thought it was lacking contrast. Any feedback or criticism is much appreciated.

It's been a very long while since I had last shot a landscape photo. I recently did a 24-hour photo trip to Redding and Dunsmuir area. For a while, it felt really weird and clumsy to be using tripod and filters to take pictures. Here's a shot from the last stop of that trip, the Sundial Bridge in the beautiful city of Redding, CA.

A portrait of my baby in my hands. March 2011.

We are happy to announce the birth of our first baby. Mom and baby are both doing great. I feel so blessed to have such a cute baby girl. Although she has been keeping us all awake at night attending to her feeding and diaper change routine, she is really a joy to be with. I have never felt so sleepy yet so awake at the same time. We are definitely enjoying every moment with her.
Painted Ladies, San Francisco, CA

A classic view of the row of Victorian Houses in San Francisco with the city's skyline as backdrop. San Francisco, CA. January 2011.

I have wanted to take this picture for some time now. But I wanted to take this during the holiday season so the light on top of Trans America building will be lit. The month of December went by very quickly. Although we had a few days off but I was either busy with other stuff that were more important (hehehe) or the weather was just not suitable. On other occasions, I would prefer cloudy sky but for this view, I wanted a clear sky so the skyline in the background can be clearly visible with no other distracting elements. In the high-res image, you can also see Christmas decors inside some of these houses! Very cool to look at! (talking about privacy! hehehe)

When I did not get a chance to come here by year end, I thought my window of opportunity has closed. Luckily, earlier this month the weather cooperated and I had the afternoon and evening free.
