These have been busy days for the airlines, lots of passengers and flights to everywhere, but now I have a couple of well deserved free days to enjoy with my family. Great, because that is the idea behind Christmas, to stop for a while and have time with family.

I'm not kind of beach boy, but Paulina gave me this gift for my 50th birthday, so here we are in Dominican Republic, enjoying a perfect weather, smooth breeze and warm sea to make it a wonderful vacation.

Arica caves

There are many caves in the cliffs. Some are tunnels like this, connecting with the next stretch of coast, which makes the experience more interesting.

This double arch was carved by the sea in the cliffs south of Arica, Chile's northernmost city.
It is a spectacular place with many caves and curiously it has been neglected as a touristic site, so visitors have no information nor services there.

This rock arch is located very close to the city and port of Antofagasta, in the Atacama desert, north of Chile.
It is the remnant of a soft sedimentary cliff eroded by the sea, but standing over a harder rock that has prevented it from falling.
Birds love it. Tourists too.

En route from Puerto Montt to Punta Arenas, this massif is the checkpoint where we switch between air control stations. It also marks the beginning of the glacier land.

This astronomical observatory is located 130 km. south of the coastal city of Antofagasta, in the Atacama desert. It is the biggest complex operated in Chile by the European Southern Observatory, ESO. VLT means Very Large Telescope, though in fact there are four 8.2-meter telescopes that when operated combined, form the Very Large Telescope Interferometer.

M family and I spent some days with friends in Guayaquil, Ecuador. It was a long waited opportunity because both Paulina and I lived there in different years, so when I could get the tickets, we packed and departed.
This iguana is one of many who live in the Parque Centenario in front of the cathedral, in the very downtown. It is cool to see them roam the square as if they were in the jungle.
