Merry Christmas Darling - Karen Carpenter

My husband and I heard Karen and Richard Carpenter sing “Merry Christmas Darling” for the very first time in public at a benefit in the gymnasium at California State University, Long Beach. (for a scholarship fund) in 1968 . The lyrics of Merry Christmas Darling were written in the 40’s by Frank Pooler, the choral director for the university choir. Richard Carpenter accompanied Pooler's university choir and Karen sang in the choir. In 1966, at Pooler's request, Richard composed the music for this ballad, which was first released in 1970 for A&M Records. My husband is a HUGE Carpenters fan … I dedicate this Christmas song to him … Wishing all of you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year …

My Santa and I are celebrating our 43 anniversary today … 43 years ago he bought me a jade wedding band while he was in Vietnam before he came home for our wedding. On our wedding night, the ring slipped off my hand and fell into the toilet and broke in two pieces. This past April, my Santa designed a new wedding ring for me and had it made at Fox Fire Jewelers using the beautiful fiery diamond from my late mother’s engagement ring.

Many of you have asked about my progress after my gastric bypass surgery in November of 2009. To date, I have lost 170 lbs and am still losing. I have gone from a 5X down to a USA size 12 or medium. Santa is VERY happy!

Kelli, Spencer and I had a fantastic day checking out all of the lovely plants at Swanson's Nursery in Seattle. I bought a King Edward VII Flowering Current and an Arctic Fire Dogwood. Kelli bought a bareroot Red Crimson Rhubarb and bareroot Spartan Blueberry. I stood and lusted after a gorgeous HUGE garden urn that I wanted for our garden bed on the northside outside our bedroom window. I have dreamed of having an urn exactly like this one for years ... I saw it and said Eureka! at last! and had my checkbook out until Kelli found the price-tag ... $499.00 ... that is FOUR HUNDRED NINETY NINE DOLLARS! ... oh well, for a few minutes I ALMOST owned the urn of my dreams ...

This should have been my Valentine’s Day post. This is my lover … best friend … soul mate … and my sweet husband. He has stuck with me as a teenager with an 18” waistline at 117 pounds to a 63-year-old gray-haired mature woman weighing 327 pounds. He has never lost that sparkle and look of love in his eyes … never made me feel bad about myself … still treats me like his teenage sweetheart. He has been my rock all through our 43-year marriage and especially over the past few months. The changes that this Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery made have been drastic … I don’t eat more than a half cup of a very restricted list of food each day so he has taken on the task of cooking for himself. He really enjoys cooking and experimenting with new recipes on his own. It has been worth it in the long run. So far, I have lost 102 lbs. … gone from a 4X to 1X in my clothes size … I have 85 to 90 lbs. to go before I reach my goal weight. My health and mobility are improving daily … can’t wait to get out and take some photographs of my garden in the spring …

Post Script: November 15, 2010 ... a little over one year since my surgery. This morning I weighed in at 155 lbs for a total of 172 lbs lost this past year. I am now wearing a size medium (USA size 12). It's fun shopping for clothes that don't look like a big sack!

Today is a very special day ... not only is it Valentine's Day but it is also the 18th birthday of our first born granddaughter ... her whole family on both sides were at the bedside of her mom before, during and after the delivery ... a wonderful ocassion to share with our son ... wishing all of you a very special day with family and friends ...

A little info on the photo ... photo not cropped ... "sharpness and blurr" tweeked a bit ... add the "Happy Valentine" writing with editing program ....

And no, I didn't bake this delicious dessert! ... too much of a temptation. I am adjusting to my new life after Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass surgery ... desserts and anything "white" (desserts, flour, pasta, sugar, potatoes,etc) are off limits ... ;~(
