Another great Paris museum is the Musee Carnavalet, the 'city museum' started in the late 19th century to preserve and collect images, ex- and interiors of Paris as it once was.

This here is a hilarious painting (1920's , I think?) by Albert Guillaume of an absolutely anti social couple trying to find their seats in the theatre amongst their totally disgusted fellow spectators... Just look at all the individual expressions!

This one is not too bad although my picture should have had a little more foreground, compared to my grandfather's 1911 water color. Note the support under the staircase that has disappeared since then!

When we bought the new house in Bellingwolde in December 2008, this mural was painted on the livingroom wall. We have since painted over it but not until I made this picture of it.

After all, it depicts a well known bridge around here over the canal between here and Germany, the Verenigd of B.L. Tijdenskanaal. I love that still, straight, peaceful and often beautiful water.

It may not be a great painting (the reason why we got rid of it, sorry, unknown artist!) but certainly nice enough to have its imagery preserved here on flickr.

hidden treasures

doc(q)man posted a photo:

For years I have owned this small (approx. 12.5 x 18 cm), framed 'declaration of love' my grandfather, Frits Lensvelt, wrote for his wife, Nell Bronger. It reads as follows:

"Dearest,
If dark clouds might come floating into the clear sky of our life together and approach the golden sun of our happiness, then let's remember the wonderful time of our friendship and the joyous beginnings of our LOVE"

In gold there are a number of dates written at the bottom: December 14th 1913, January 2nd, February 19 'th '14. The last date is the day they got married. Maybe the first date is when he asked for her hand or the engagement and the second the day they got their marriage license ('in ondertrouw gaan'), as was pointed out by vfm4.

Note the wonderful calligraphy and ornamentation he brought to this little gem! He always took great care in writing beautifully, as you can see here for instance.

Now, you may ask, why a diptych with a water color portrait?

When I took the statement out of its (original!) frame to scan it for this post, the water color of exactly the same size, turned out to have been hidden behind it! It is painted on cardboard and has not been seen since my grandfather used it to back up his statement in the frame...

I am quite sure it was not painted by Frits Lensvelt himself. It has been signed in the lower left corner and even dated: February 27th 1904. I do not recognize the signature but I hope to someday find an expert who can tell me. It has obviously been painted by a professional and the person depicted could be a farmer or maybe a fisherman. Love the moustache! Any help in this respect will be greatly appreciated.

What a chance find, though!

My last diptych of the places my grandfather painted in Rothenburg ob der Tauber when he visited there in 1911. A last gate as well, after the Hospital, the Kobolzeller and the Klingen Gates.
But wait... what happened? What do I see in the picture I took some ten days ago? It cannot be! A guard defying the limitations of time and space? It sure looks like that...

Here, too we can see how much greener the town's surroundings have become since my grandfather sat there painting them in 1911: now trees and bushes abound while it all seems so bare back then!

Note that the small pole with what looks like a bunch of canon balls is still there, almost exactly as it was in 1911 or did Frits Lensvelt just paint the pole somewhat lower than it really was?

Again, I didn't even try to find this exact spot. My grandfather painted the view of this little village, called Detwang, as seen from the walls of Rothenburg.

Again, it's clearly visible how much greener the valley and hills have become since 1911. Virtually all is wooded now while it seemed quite barren then.

Well, here I really couldn't get anywhere near the right place; I tried, did I ever, descending from the town into the valley where the Tauber river flows, but once down there I found two things: all the land bordering on the river was fenced off and most of it had very dense shrubbery growing on it. So I walked over the beautiful double bridge, even trespassed and slid down to the bank but found nowhere to take a picture...

Okay, I settled for a view of the bridge with the town in the background, all the while thinking the way my grandfather painted the scene is really not conform reality. It's impossible to have the town towering so high over the river at that point...
Rothenburg, Plonlein 1911-2007

doc(q)man posted a photo:

Well, we're back...
The trip was short, intense and quite tiring, but also quite beautiful and satisfying. We saw four medieval towns in Bavaria, of which Bamberg and Rothenburg ob der Tauber made the most impression.

And of course I tried to photographically 'redo' my grandfather's 1911 watercolors. I only had four hours to find the twelve different spots and take the pictures which made the whole undertaking somewhat nervewrecking. Looking at the results on the computer I find that a more careful, slower pace would certainly have yielded better results...

In the end I found eight of the twelve exact locations and in two other cases I came pretty close. But sometimes new buildings or other objects stood in the way of reaching the exact spot to shoot the picture from.

In this case, for instance, I could not back up any further to get the tower to stick out above the house as in the water color. Well, I tried...
