Lori and I were out exploring this morning not far from home. It was quite foggy (I de-fogged this in post) came across this small barn and a quaint little shed. Looked like they have been abandoned for a long time. Nature is taking them over.
Thistle, Sea Holly

tmalinski posted a photo:

Out back playing in the garden for a while today. The Thistles caught my eye so I grabbed my rig and had some fun. It was tough catching it in between breezes.
180 macro, f5.6 focus stacked, better viewed "L"
This is 28 images stacked using Helicon Focus then a little Photoshop processing to polish my presentation.
For those of you interested in trying this and have never done it before it is not difficult, but it does take some practice and patients, but most of all, it demands good technique. Not all images stack well, some produce ghosting around the edges of details which is almost impossible to eliminate in post. This stack did not need any ghost removal.
I use my heavy tripod and my best technique for dead sharp pics. This includes mirror lockup, remote release, I lock down my ball head and torque the lens back to the tripod with elastics to keep it absolutely still, and I shoot at my lens sweet spot aperture 5.6. All that's left is cooperation with mother nature, "no-wind" The last thing is to develop a good method to vary your focus in between shots. I've tried focus rails, but I like cranking the barrel better. After I set up without taking any pictures I manually focus on the nearest element and then crank the barrel to the last element I want focused to get an idea of how much barrel turning I need to do. Now comes the "steady hand and light touch" part. I simply start at the closest element and take the pic. Remember, mirror lockup... so I click twice with my remote letting the mirror pop up and all movement to stop then I click to take the pic. Then I crank the barrel so so slight to focus a little deeper into the image with an extremely light touch being careful not exceed the DOF for 5.6 aperture. I repeat this technique until I cover the entire range of DOF.
Fair warning, Stacking with Macro is an acquired skill. You must do this over and over to get proficient at it. (at least I did) If you loose registration somewhere in the middle of your process you pretty much have to start over again.
Good Luck, feel free to email me if you need any help. Mastering the technique for macro stacking will improve your overall photography skill. You will get sharper images with single shots also.
Hope this helps.

So I called Lori over to take a look at this pic and she said "oh what pretty swirly little ice cream cones" I said "they look like torpedo's and here they come"
27 images focus stacked using Helicon Focus, 180 macro @ f3.5

I've been working on cleaning up this image. I brought it into Photoshop and touched up most of the artifacts that were left over from Helicon processing. I also experimented with the depth of focus by selecting specific images to process limiting the range of in-focus flowers. Then I replaced the image with the new one seen here

Our pond frog is getting quite a bit larger and less intimidated by my lens in his face lately. He probably figures he’s big enough to take me on and he doesn’t have anything to loose in the water like I do. He actually let me get to within 18 inches of him with my 180. So I asked him to smile while I took a couple of snaps.
This is full frame from my 5D, polarizer, mirror lockup, .4s @f10

Check it out "L"

Here is a close up (100% scale from the image below) you can almost see my self portrait with our Deck pergola above.
You can't beat the detail from the 180 macro. I used Mirror lockup & a polarizer, .4sec @ f10
