Common Loon

For years I've wanted to see a common loon in breeding plumage but they are usually long gone from NJ before thy reach it. So it was nice to see one in Delaware last Saturday.

We were lucky enough to see this pair of American Avocets mating at Prime Hook NWR. You can see some of the choreography of their post-coital dance here. Unfortunately, it was raining around this time so the light wasn't great but it didn't make it any less spectacular to see.

Nice to see the shorebirds coming back to town -- while I was hoping for both dowitchers, it was great to see these short-billed dowitchers in breeding plumage.

Cattle Egret

It's been years since I've seen a cattle egret, despite looking in many places. Yesterday on our marathon DE Bird-a-thon quest we almost missed it but found one literally at the last minute flying over us in Delaware City. An hour later, as we were leaving, we came across a hundred of them in fields. The light wasn't the best but I couldn't pass up the chance to try to get a shot.

I've seen this species before but I was surprised to find that I didn't have this species on my photo lifelist. There were a bunch of them out at Parvin State park on Friday. I believe this is a female.

Although I'm pretty sure that this is a Greater Yellowlegs, it does seem a bit thin for a greater.

I'm not used to seeing Brown Thrashers out in the open - the other two we saw this day were both skulking in the brush, for the most part - but this bird was more than happy to be out in the open.
