Look—it's serendipity, really. All I had today were pictures of Serena getting her hair dyed. Booooo-ring! I was recently invited to post a tribute photo to one of my favorite Flickr groups, and the theme is six. I have exactly six crickets. It's a no brainer!

Don't worry. My cricket-eating days are over. And Serena's were over before they even started.

Happy Birthday to David Bowie. He was my first rock star, and I still adore him.

Set of Stamps - This was a suggestion (7 months ago!) from
dogfaceboy. I think it's a cool idea. Design a series of 4 to 8 postage
stamps. You choose the theme, but the goal should be to use several
related images like you'd see in a postage stamp series. Make them
look as much like real stamps as you can! Present the collection as a
single Flickr image."

cwd1411: Got FPS? ~ Put together a series of
images that demonstrate your camera's
continuous-shooting ability. You'll be submitting
one image to the pool, but it should contain a
series of individual photos. If your camera
doesn't let you take photos in rapid succession,
do you best to fake it. Of course, as always, the
goal here is to produce something interesting...
not just a bunch of boring photos appended
next to each other. :)

My sister and I talked last night about our Passover Seder and
whether we honor our grandparents and the Jewish tradition
by doing it the way we did, whether we ever do.

I'm not much of a Jew. I don't believe in a traditional god, and
I don't keep kosher. Mostly I'm Jewish by birth, by right, by
guilt, by pleasure. I'm Jewish by ethnicity. Jewish by choice.

As the elders of the tribe leave us, we sometimes find it less
important to take part in some of these religious rites, which
always felt as though they were done out of obligation.

Yet it now occurs to me that it's even more important. How
do we make sure that our kids get to grow up with our values,
when so many of our rituals shape them?

At the same time, it sometimes feels pointless, as family
dwindles, to go to such trouble; it is for family that we do it
at all, not for any love of God, and not really out of obligation.

But family is as big as you make it. And that door has always
been open to the outsider, the less fortunate, the luckier.

I am talking to myself. I have said these things before. And
I have agreed.

So my vote is to continue having Seders—yeah, reading that
shitty, ungrammatical Hagaddah of our grandparents—to
preserve this fun, funky, dysfunctionally functional day that
celebrates, as all Jewish holidays do: They tried to kill us, we
overcame, let's eat.

Maybe I'm not losing my religion after all.

"Assignment 1. Zoom. Help me develop a series of three images that illustrate how a scene changes as your lens get longer. We see this in photo instruction books, but I have yet to see it executed very well. For this assignment you will stand in one spot, shoot three images changing the direction of the camera as little as possible. How much you change the focal length is up to you, but my goal is to use the best series of three in my actual classes to illustrate what zoom does as a lens gets longer. With your permission of course. I recommend 30-300mm. Evil Mighty Acorn created a great series of images illustrating how depth changes as focal length changes, check it out here . She moved to keep the scene the same, you will stand still and change the scene dramatically. Tag all three with cwd641."
