at a bend in the river called "the Potholes", the water drops fast, cutting a steep-sided canyon with waterfalls and pools . the rock is so smooth that i hesitated getting too close to the edge

a small forest fire burns a few miles down the canyon from Florence Lake Dam in the Sierra National Forest . this was taken from the Florence Lake ferry, taking us to the trailhead on the far side of the lake, which accesses the John Muir Trail near the half-way point

Boundary Peak

Boundary Peak is the highest point in Nevada (13,140 feet / 4005 meters) . it is connected by a short saddle to its higher neighbor, Montgomery Peak (not visible here), less than a mile away and across the border in California . the trail goes to the left of the image and up the far side of the lower peak, then heads up inside of the north facing bowl below the top of the peak

an abandoned homestead on the north edge of the White Mountains, probably associated with the abandoned mining operations up the road . we camped in front of these buildings the night before climbing Boundary Peak, the highest point in Nevada

a herd of 11 female and young Desert Bighorn Sheep quietly materialized before us as we were heading down from White Mountain Peak, just as a small thunderstorm created ideal lighting conditions. this is at approximately 13,900 feet (4235 meters) elevation . we later learned that this herd is not often seen in this part of the White Mountains range

the University of California operates several research stations in the White Mountains on the eastern border of the state, including this one on top of White Mountain Peak (14,246 ft / 4342 m) . during a recent bike/hike to the peak, we saw a pen of pregnant domestic sheep at 12,400' elevation, used for a study of altitude on birth defect, and met researches checking soil temperature gauges which are part of the worldwide GLORIA network of high elevation climate research sites (www.gloria.ac.at/?a=2)

winter sunset reflecting off the plastic wrap on the UC Davis Mondavi Center for the Arts .
the building was wrapped in white plastic, making it look like a mini Christo piece, so that replairs could be made to the faulty waterproofing layer underneath the Center's sandstone tile cover . the work was recently completed
