A korè is a female dancer/maiden in ancient Greece. The male equivalent is a kourion. This one is dated circa 530 BCE. She was identified as belonging to the Acropolis of Athens by a British archeologist in 1935. It is a very rare piece.

Empr. au lat. anadyomène, subst., qui désignait la Vénus peinte par Apelle, attesté dep. Pline (Hist. Naturelle, 35, 87, 91 ds TLL s.v., 14, 41), du gr. ἀναδυομένη attesté pour désigner Vénus sortant de l'eau : Aφροδίτη ἀναδυομένη dep. Strabon (14, 2, 19, éd. Kramer ds Bailly). part. prés. de ἀναδύομαι « sortir du fond (de la mer) » (en parlant du soleil levant).

Notez que Vénus est comparée au soleil, dans sa faculté de sortir des eaux. Fascinant. Je n'avais jamais pensé à cela.
