"[I]n most attempts to interface living and non-living systems, you poke cells with a sharp hard object, and the cells respond in a predictable way - they die," says Berkeley Lab's Caroline Ajo-Franklin. However, it appears that the Lab has now developed a new method that grows a "natrual electron pathway" into a living organism. Will this breakthrough enable real-time monitoring and control of even the smallest internal processes of life, and if so, could we escape from the as yet inevitable duality of our nature and breach the barrier between "inside" and "outside" the individual?

On October 12, a federal judge issued an injunction to halt enforcement of the U.S. military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy. A spokeswoman for the "Concerned Women for America" complained that the judge "imposed her ill-informed and biased opinion on our military, endangering morale, health and security of our military..." But, why would "Concerned Women" support a rule that requires soldiers to hide and lie? Because, according to their website, the Concerned Women promote "Biblical values and family traditions." Oh yeah, hiding and lying.

Richard Feynman called Quantum electrodynamics (QED) "the jewel of physics." One of his many contributions was the invention of the "Feynman diagram" used to pictorially represent the interactions of certain particles according to quantum field theory.

The inevitable fusion of man and his information appliances is well on its way. Real-time connectivity to information and augmented reality systems are already available via smartphone and headmounted display. How will we cope with our changing abilty to perceive and understand the world, as these systems rapidly become less expensive, more capable, and more essential? I suspect not everyone will go along quietly.
