Applique Workshop with Russ Horne

This is the applique block that I made in Russ Horne's applique workshop. He is a master at applique and has won numerous awards on his beautiful appliqued quilts. I learned that he is also a great instructor and I thoroughly enjoyed his workshop. I plan to do a little embroidery on this block to add seeds to the sunflower and stamens & pistils to the columbine flowers.

Color Burst Medallion Quilt

Since I love medallion quilts, I started by designing the center medallion--what you see inside the innermost white on white fabric border--and added borders to get the size I wanted. I knew from the start that I would use the ribbons and bows border, because it’s different and feminine (but does not have to be). In hindsight, I think the ribbon would have looked great in polka dots or stripes. The butterfly print is the focus fabric of this "Spring" themed quilt.

Copa Cabana quilt label

This is one of my favorite quilt labels. Using MS WORD, I created the heart shape using the Insert, Basic Shapes option and centered the text in front of the shape. Printed onto a pretreated fabric sheet. With right sides together, I just sewed a backing with a slit in it onto the heart along the printed line, then turned the heart inside out. Appliqued on. Easy peasy!

Copa Cabana Ruffled Flange Binding

I made this ruffle the old fashioned way because I could not get my ruffler to cooperate. Using 108" wide fabric required me to only need four WOF strips. The corners are mitered. Approx: 45" x45"

TV Tray Pressing Board

I made this portable ironing board using a vintage folding TV tray (one of a set of seven purchased at an estate sale), a vintage cotton decorator fabric sample, and Elizabeth Hartman's tutorial here --> www.ohfransson.com/oh_fransson/2010/01/a-woman-a-plan-an-... . Since this snack tray top is only 1/8" painted particle board, I opted to use a drawstring in a bias casing to attach the cover, rather than staples. This allows me to remove the cover to launder it and attaching the cover does not damage the snack tray.

Copa Cabana Quilt Top

I designed this quilt around wonky "Copa Cabana" equilateral triangles, designed by Lynne of Lily's Quilts, set wonkily into squares. Her tutorial for these triangles can be found here--> lilysquilts.blogspot.com/2012/02/copa-cabana-triangles-ii... I sewed the triangles using partial seams. I love the wonkiness and negative spaces for quilting in this design. These fabrics were chosen for the colors of the Copa Cabana beaches in Brazil. The triangle centers and borders were fussy cut. The gold diagonal striped fabric used only in the lower right triangle is what I plan to use for the quilt binding.

Sample block with fussy cut center. A few mistakes were made which caused me to have to add extra seams. This is the first block of a project I'm starting. The tutorial can be found here--> lilysquilts.blogspot.com/2012/02/copa-cabana-triangles-ii... Since I used striped sashings, I sewed them on using a partial seam. I love its wonkiness.

My borders and sashings are seamless because I used 90" wide Kona Cotton. I love how this turned out.

This one turned out much better than my sample. It helps to "carefully" read the directions. I'm loving this!

My block is not wonky as it appears in this photo, it's just that the flannel is too loosely fitting on my design board.

I created this handquilted baby quilt in 2001 using sample blocks and test strips of different seminole techniques. Appliqued the letters of the child's name onto the quilt using different embroidery stitches for each letter. The Pansy Bow border design was taken from the "101 Quilt Blocks and Borders" book. 48" x 56"
