The New Johnstone

Some more shots from our stop over at Clemson.

When I went to school here, this version of Johnstone wasn't here. A year or two after I left they knocked down all, but one, of the original Johnstone Dormitories and built these new ones. While they are nice and a lot more modern, I feel like they did away with a right of passage. Everyone I know spent at least one year at Johnstone. Clemson started as a military school and to let you know how old the original Johnstone was, the closets still had the gun rack for two military issued rifles.

Back at Clemson.

This was written all over the place. I'm not sure what happened, but typically, this isn't a good sign. I am assuming something bad happened to Amy, but I don't know. I couldn't find anything about it anywhere. It could just be an advertising scheme or it could be relevant to something more serious and real. It was literally all over the place.

Downtown Clemson now has a metered parking garage. Boy that would have been handy back in the day when we'd drive around and around looking for a spot to park.

The town has indeed changed. I can't remember what was here when I went to school, but I know it wasn't this!

One of the more prominent buildings at Clemson. When you arrive at campus from the "Main Entrance" this is one of the first buildings you see.

The center of campus. Being an architecture student I didn't spend much time here. We had our own library in Lee Hall and there never was much of a need for me to go here. I did spend a little time there, but no much.

I did spend time walking across this area though. I took a rather eclectic mix of classes. Most architecture students, after their first year, tend to take classes that leave them cloistered in Lee Hall. I had interests outside of architecture that led me to other buildings.

The amphitheater was also a great place for entertainment. We had several religious nuts who would preach to us from the stage and say the goofiest things. One of the religion teachers actually brought her class down to the amphitheater so they could watch her debate one particular nut job about religion.

I spent a lot of time here. Studio class was three hours long and when you needed a break, this is where you went. It was a nice space and still looks the same. We were there on a Thursday so the building was kind of empty. Monday, Wednesday and Friday the building is hoping.

The landscaper who planted the trees in this courtyard, however, didn't really plan right. While they are nice and the shade they provide is much welcomed the berries that they produce cause the birds to go nutty. When you are working on a project and you hear a bird crash into the glass near your head it'll make you jump. They did this quite often, but I never got used to it.

No matter which direction you come from, North, South, East, or West, all roads share this common feature (as do most of the on campus streets).

My daughter saw this picture and said. "A Clue, A Clue!" and then she asked, "Where's Blue?"

Luckily, most of meals were eaten at another dining hall. I didn't mind the food most of the time, but it was never what I'd call good. They now have a lot of different options for food on campus and there is actually a Chili's inside Harcombe. You also have a Taco Bell and Chick-Fillet on campus, and I'm sure there are more. I didn't make it into the new Student Union, so I don't know what else is now available there.

I don't think anyone looks back on their time at Harcombe with longing or a tear in their eye.

Another prominent building on campus. This sits very close to Tilman Hall and is the other main building you see when you arrive at campus. This is the building that you send all your money to (not one of the more popular destinations for students).

This used to just be a plain old grass plot of land between Lee Hall and the Engineering building. It looks a LOT better now.

Clemson now has bus service with real buses. When I was there we had these small shuttle buses which beat the hell out of walking, but they weren't nearly as fancy as this.

This was the location of an on-Campus bar while I was in school. We spent a fair amount of time shooting pool and drinking a beer there. They left the sign up, but the bar itself is no more.
